Can any one tell me if LEINEN and PERTON are quality makers. Are they WW compatible? What are the downsides, if any, to buying either?

If you are considering the lathes currently on eBay,

Perton were WW standard lathes, made I think in California in the 1950's. Don't know much about them.

Leinen, or Boley-Leinen and not to be confused with G. Boley, was/is a German top quality toolmaker. Many consider Leinen, along with Levin, as the top watchmakers lathes brands.

The Leinen currently on eBay is, however a 8mm 1960's Reform type and not a WW. Collets and chucks are WW compatible, but the bed is much slimmer, somewhere in between Geneva and WW type lathes.

I have a Leinen Reform myself and I can vouch for the quality.

I can also recommend a visit to Tony Griffiths, www.lathes.co.uk/ if you are interested in lathes.

cheers, Per
