People had so little information to go on back in those days. Look at the many people who died too from working on the A bombs during ww2.

Radium - 1915/17 - no one understood!
A Bombs 1945/49 - Again no one understood!
Vietnam 1960s - Uranium depleted bombs or agent Orange (just like above) no one cared

Connection - nothing has changed in 100 years.
