Hello, I just acquired this large Vienna regulator. It is over 5 feet tall. I haven’t been able to find any information this type of movement. I cleaned the movement and the weight has only dropped maybe 1/4 inch in a day. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Bruce

That is an impressive clock.

The name on the dial - Hübsch - appears to be German surname.

The second line - V Karline - I assume is a city or town. Karline is also a German name (Karla), but I suspect the second line might not be in the German language, based on the 'accents' above the 'i' and the 'e' in Karline. I suspect that the dial represents the name of either the maker or retailer in a city within the Austro-Hungarian Empire (the current day Czech Republic perhaps?).

JTD will no doubt be able to unravel your dial and possibly supply some additional (and better :) ) information than I can provide.

Regards.

Hello BB,

Do you have any photos of the cleaned movement? Some interesting detail there. Photos of the plates, front and back, may help with identification.

Are you saying the weight is dropping ¼ inch per day and it is keeping good time?

Sorry, I don't have info on the maker/retailer, but from the gearing and minimal daily weight drop, I wonder if it is a 30-day runner? How much does the weight weigh?

I will take some pictures tomorrow of the movement after cleaning. The movement doesn’t have any makers marks or any markings at all. I don’t have the hands on it now. Just making sure it runs. Thanks for your response, Bruce

I will weigh the weight tomorrow. It is interesting I counted the pendulum swings back and forth 30 times a minute and my 8 day Vienna’s are 40 times a minute. I have seen pictures of 30 day movements and they are not similar to this one. Thanks, Bruce

The wording below the name on the dial is in Czech, and means 'in Karlín'. Karlín is now a part of Prague but was formerly an independent town. So, V. Hübsch, in Karlín.

Abeler does not list any V. Hübsch, and it may be quite likely that he was the retailer.

An interesting movement with unusual pillars and the use of a sub frame.

Hi JTD, thanks for the information. I assume that that doesn’t mean the clock was made in Karlin but maybe sold there. Or was it possibly made there? Thanks, Bruce

There is no real way of telling, certainly it was sold in Karlín,

But there were a lot of clocks made and sold in that part of the Austro-Hungarian empire that were never marked.

Can you post clear photos of the back and front plates of the movement?

Here are some pictures of the cleaned movement. The weight for this clock weighs 6.5 lbs.

Wow. That movement is a thing of great beauty - far more than just basic functionality.

Certainly a thing of beauty, someone here will recognize some of the features: the pillar style, the back cock, the keyholes…Austrian?

It looks like a fine movement. Did you get the tooth counts ?
