Hello all,

Once again I find myself looking at fixing up a cuckoo. It has a regula 20 movement? Not sure if I have see one but it appears to be in working order, I'll still tear it down and service it. My main thing is this, I need to find a topper for this clock. Any ideas on size? It is about 14-1/4" wide and I have found some but not in this particular color scheme. Also, what is the recommended weight and pendulum size for this movement? I'm going to check in one place that I think it had some info on it but figured I'd ask here.

Thanks
Jeff

Your case is blonde and few of anything will come in that color. The color will have to match to look presentable. It's an old style 'hunting' case (dead anamals). The top piece would usually stick out about 1 1/4" past the roof, on a clock that size. The pendulum would have probably been an oak leaf, similar to the ones at the lower corners of your trim and medium or large in size. Good luck, Willie X

Thanks Willie... I figured it was that color and yes there isn't much that I have found that will match it. When you say 1-1/4" past roof, are you meaning the peak or the soffit end? Closest topper that I have found says it is 14 x 6 so I doubt it will work for this clock. I will just have to keep looking as I will find something somewhere for it. The rest of the parts, bellows, weights, lift wire etc. will be relatively easy to find most anywhere. The oak leaf pendulum will probably look better if it is a large then it can hang down some from the case. Trying to find a back for it is also being a little bit of a pain but I guess that could be easily made and just get a larger gong to go into it.

I guess if anything, will try to find parts to make it a regular cuckoo as I have really no attachment to the clock like I do with my other one. So I could get creative with this one and just do a regular 5 leaf or something, provided I could find a face that would fit the case.

Schatznut - Would you know what bushing sizes be for the time side of this Regula 20? I have it out of the case to service over the holidays as I have a week off from work. The 2nd wheel on the back plate seems way looser than I would like it to be. I know you gave me a spreadsheet on one of my other posts but wasn't sure if it would be the same for this one. So I need to get all the tools to do it as well so will have to find everything, hopefully get at one place and not have to get the tools at one place and bushings at another. I've see small bushing kits, would they be worth it?

Your best bet is to get an assortment of bushings and choose the one that looks best.

I figured as much. Guess will have to tear it apart to figure out size to get. Only one looks like it should be fixed and when I looked at a assortment, YIKES dey are not cheap. I'd almost buy some brass stock and turn my own for what they want for the assortments. Was looking at them so I could have different sizes on hand for other movements as well but would have to get the tools also to be able to install them.

Sorry I can't help there - I've not worked on the Regula 20 before. If you've not done bushings before, best do some research in the archives - there is a lot of discussion on how to do it, and there are more wrong ways than right ways, and you generally only get one shot to get it right. Good luck!

Yeah I have done some reading through here and yea there is a lot of different ways, tools etc on it. If anything I’ll just get it serviced and measure the pivot and get what I’ll need to do the one. Then when it comes, pop it back apart and put it in.

On most I use KWM bushings for the #2 reamer on the upper pivots and KWM bushings for the #3 reamer for the chain wheels. The pivot hole is broached out as necessary. If you buy bushing sets you won't have to do nearly as much broaching. I broach all pivot holes for fit. Willie X

Well it has been awhile since I have serviced/repaired this one. I got all the parts needed to replace the bellows, missing bellows wire and what not. I found out what size weights were needed for it (420g I believe is what it needed) but I also got what was supposed to be a 1 day oak leaf pendulum. I have tried everything and even with the leaf to the very top, I cannot get this to even come close to staying in time. I have a tiny regular leaf pendulum on there that came with another hunter clock I got for my son for Christmas. I've been able to get it to stay within +/- 1-2 minutes with it. Just looks weird that you cannot see the pendulum hanging down on it. (sorry I didn't stop it to take a compare picture of the pendulum)

I still need to get the horn and mouthpiece put on and get a back made so I can install the gong for it. Still kind of looking for a topper but have been thinking of just scrapping the face on it and come up with something of my own design and cut/engrave it on my CO2 laser.

If the replacement pendulum stick is too long, you may need to remove a section of the bottom of the stick.
If there is enough weight hanging down under the leaf, it will slow it down.
I have had to do this in the past with one.

Will give it a try. As with it being like it is, I believe it was way slow now that I think of it, it may allow it to swing faster like the shorter one that is on it now with a tiny leaf.

I'm thinking the original movement has been swapped out for one for a smaller clock. You might have to replace it with one with a longer pendulum requirement.

It may be possible that could of happened but not sure as there is no other mounting holes in the case. I'll just use it the way it is for now until I decide what I'm going to do with it as I have some ideas to rework the case into a railroad style one or find face and topper for a regular cuckoo. It was just weird that the pendulum I got was supposed to be for a 1 day movement but it is so slow even with the oak leaf at the top LOL.
