Large Black Marble Case Restoration

Hi all

I recieved this French clock from a customer a number of months back but I been putting it off untill now.

I have always used gold leaf to gild the engraved parts of these but the engraving on this one is very shallow and I know the client hasn't the budget for the time it would take.

My first question is has anyone tried gold paint instead of gilding ? I m not 100 % sure that all of these were originally gilded, any thoughts?
The "picture panels " and pillar s are again parts that I d be interested in your thought s on how to proceed with them.

I ve attached photos to give you a better idea of what I m taking about.
Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Eamonn

Have you considered Rub-n-Buff. I believe it is available on your side of the pond. I use it on lots of clock parts and cases. When dry, cover it with Lacquer. I have made lot of posts concerning it. There is plenty to read and photos too. In the big blue bar on the top of the page, there is a search feature. Type in Rub-n-Buff.

It is very cost effective, plenty of tint options, and inexpensive. JTD a poster finds it in the UK. I would imagine you could find it too.
