I may need either a psychiatrist or a financial counselor over my compulsion to buy Barraud artifacts. I did not intend to buy this one since I already had two nice Barraud marine chronometers but it looked so nice and seemed so cheap when I forgot the buyer's premium in the heat of bidding. It is very nice and I will hopefully be better soon. (I am also playing with gallery insertion into posts.)

I can't help you with the psychiatric option since I suffer from the same compulsion ... but I'm willing to offer my services on the financial side as I manage to resist that compulsion! In the UK the Barraud name is commanding big bucks (or more correctly "pounds"

Hi River rat,

Never seen that before on a chronometer is that a date function on the dial ? And nice chronometer.

No, that's the up-down indicator, it is very unusual to see one in that form. 8-day instruments are unusual as well.

Regards,

Graham

Just beautiful Tom.
For some reason I really like 8 day chronometers. I wish mine was that nice.

Is that style exclusively a Barruad feature? I've only seen it on these. Even the one picture of a Barraud in Rupert Gould's book has the same indicator.
Dan.

Barraud liked the sector wind indicator and used it both on 8 day and 56 hour chronometers. I do not think they "owned" it in any sense. Others could have used it. Here is the device as seen under the dial on a 56 hours chronometer. The gold crescent on the dial would be the badge shown from the Greenwich collection if the piece had been used by the English navy. This example was purchased from South America.

here it is on a miniature version of the 8 day chronometer.

Paul Regan did some work on 933 and I just got it back today. The top lid was warped and would not stay closed.

Richard Ketchen finished his conservation work on 931 last week so the entire family is together now.

There are 3 chronometers and the Flamenville cabin clock.

The largest and smallest chronometers are 8 day and the other is fitted with Lund’s middle temperature device.

The clock and the large 8 day would have been together in the Barraud shop in 1818.

I decided to arrange my chronometer display to feature 931 and 933. It took a bit of care to get the Flamanville to display accurate time but it is now keeping time with its chronometer brother.

The stand now shows the 4 Barrauds, some of my favorite books and my John Fletcher that appears on the dust jacket of Konrad Knirim’s book on English military timepieces along with 4 deck watches by Johannsen (2), Isaac and Crisp.

Love the display, Tom  There is something special about knowing that all these pieces (or most of them, anyway) might actually have been seen displayed together in Barraud's shop in the early 1800s.

Now all you have to do is to reconstruct the interior of his shop, and tak some more photos ....

I was exploring Twitter today and found a Tweet that featured a post in this thread. I really am enjoying the Barraud collection but this thread reminded me that I had to part with some really nice chronometers in order to accommodate the new McIntyre watch in my collection.

The really nice Fletcher chronometer, that was featured on the cover of Konrad Knirim's book on English Military timepieces, and associated pocket chronometers that are in the display now have new homes. I do miss them, but I have their pictures and the memories of enjoying them.

Did you see Barrauds number 750 up for auction soon Tom?

No, I did not see that. Is it a clock or chronometer?
