• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Berry, if it was too easy it would not be fun. :)
Flutter can be defeated, but temperature changes are the weakness of most 400 day clocks. The horolovar suspension springs are supposed to have a flat modulus of elasticity so ambient temperature changes don't affect spring rate. I've tried freeze spray on one horolovar suspension spring before and the rate did not change, so it seems to be true. Now the pendulums are another story, just brass which is highly affected by temperature.
The Atmos is a different beast, its kept fully wound for constant power and from what I have read there suspension springs are specifically processed to have a negative modulus of elasticity which compensates for the pendulum thermal expansion coefficient. Almost makes me want a little heat treat oven.

Of course you're quite right about that Wayne. Its the challenge. I have had "drives" to improve my own collection of 400 day models. It worked for a while but only for months rather than a year. I'm talking about timekeeping primarily. They have it in them to be very good. As you say - brass is not near to being ideal. However towering over all else is the challenge of flutter. Unless that is quelled other things aren't worth too much effort. Of course timekeeping is not the only thing these clocks offer. They are a fascinating ornament. An intriguing piece of mechanical machinery. How well do I remember the very first one where I would have happily settled for it to just maintain! That very same clock has just come back into my ownership and after a clean-up etc it runs very well indeed. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for your reply. Best rgds, Berry.

Figured I report back here after a few days of running and adjustments. It is still going so I must have done something right. It is even to within 1 minute right now on time. I know I probably can't expect it to be 100% accurate but I think for a newbe to take on one of these is quite the task. The only other movement I have torn down and cleaned before this was a Regula 25. I know that I probably couldn't of done it without your suggestions/comments in here. I know it makes me feel good knowing that I repaired something that has some sentimental value to me, actually both movements/clocks do as they came from the same person. I may never get all the clocks he had and had made but I am still trying on that, but to take ones he had, repaired then given to me, means so much more. Especially this one as it was a wedding present for me and my wife. Now to see if it will make it to June so we can wind it up for the year. Thank you all once again and I will be building a spring winder once I get all the needed tools to build one as doing it by hand is no fun, even on a little spring like these.

You have done really well and I can identify totally with the emotional side of fixing things that have a personal sentimental value. Never mind about the help which also gives pleasure the givers, just count your luck on getting such a good result at an early stage. That luck is only made possible by the efforts you made. I hope this success will provide a platform for you to go on and enjoy this wonderful hobby. We'll be seeking your advice soon!
Best regards Berry.

Berry,

I don't attribute it to all luck. It is taking what was said in here and actually understanding it, then applying that to actually working on it. Me being a machinist might have had some other help in that I strive for accurate parts and that comes down to +/- 0.0001 sometimes. The next task will be trying to revive a 3 train Hermle movement with balance escapement. I've already cleaned the balance and it passed the stand alone run test. I think there is more that needs to be cleaned in the movement but that one is going to be a bit trickier to deal with than this one was. I know it won't need bushings because it has sat more than it has ran in the past 30+ years. So a good cleaning and polishing should fix it. Hopefully someday, after gaining knowledge of doing these, I can contribute back as well by helping others.

Well after another week, she is still going. Still need to do some adjustments as I see it had gained a little from the last time. Not sure if my son jumping around and walking like an elephant in the living room is causing it to gain as it was within a minute. Will stop it, reset time and start it back up later on today and see how it does over the weekend. Oh I did another thing... Became a member of the NAWCC yesterday. Figured might as well as I've gained knowledge from here, with more still to learn and figured it was worth it to me to become a member.

I figured if I didn't have much knowledge on doing this stuff, yet, at least I could give back some how. Even if it is just a membership for now.
