Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

Good morning.

I'm having a hard time finishing up re-assembly of my Kundo full size. Stuck on the placement of the tension washers on the minute arbor. Photo attached of what I have left. Can someone guide me in buttoning this up. Thanks!

The wave washer goes on first and rests on the shoulder of the center arbor...should be concave with the bent portions pointing towards you. Next is the flat washer. Then the cannon pinion, intermediate wheel (usually some kind of pin or clip holding this on), hour pipe, then the hands and finally the domed washer and taper pin.

I suppose a case could be made for reversing the order of the flat washer and wave washer...not sure it makes much difference that I can tell. I checked a number of pictures from past rebuilds and it seems that mostly the wave washer went on first.

This is the way I assemble them too. With the flat to the hour pipe gear seems less likely to jam the works.

You're probably right. I think that's something to consider when using the long football-shaped tension washers. For the smaller round ones, by the time it's flattened with the hands going on, I don't see how it could catch the leaves of the cannon pinion. Usually the smaller round ones have a diameter that is less than the leaves of the pinion so not really a problem. But it's one of those things...do it consistently for all of your rebuilds and you'll know what you have at any time.

Thanks, that did the trick. What are the considerations for attaching the hands? Hour hand goes on, how far down the shaft? I'm thinking it doesn't matter as long as it doesn't interfere with the minute hand. I have the minute hand on and with the clock running the shaft turns, but the hand isn't. How do I set that up correctly? I'll play with it, but appreciate to hear what I'm missing.

Thanks.

It'll only work one way! Glad you found it. Yeah, the hour hand needs to slip on to the hour pipe to the point where a small amount of the hour pipe sticks past the outside edge of the hour hand. That way, the hour hand itself can't interfere with the placement of the minute hand.
