I just took in this 8-Day cuckoo, which lived in a busy kitchen and then (not running) in the garage.

I'm hopeing someone has a good method for cleaning up such a dirty case, without damaging the painted parts?

Pendulum looks OK, I guess it was shielded underneath the case? Willie X

I soaked one in kerosene for a while after I took it apart! Cleaned it right up.

I had the same issue on my Cuckoo clock I got off eBay. Mine wasn't as severe as this one but it was definitely greasy and the dust had stuck to it similar to the photo. Unfortunately it took a few hours to do it but didn't damage the paint. I used a cup of hot water, a cup of vinegar, and table spoon of Murphy's Oil soap. I used a spray bottle to apply it in small areas and then cleaned as I went with a flat camel hair paintbrush (wiping it off on a wet washcloth as I went) and a zillion Q-tips.

Isopropanol works great against kitchen grease. Test first if it doesn't remove the paint as well.

Clearly a result of total neglect! This is not quite the same but similar to floor clock owners who stand their clocks right next to a window or exterior door and allowing direct sunlight to fall on their clock!
Over the years I've seen some shocking damage to clock cases caused as a result of sun bleaching. Ruination!

OK, got er done, about 15 hours labor + parts. I even did a redo on the weights and chains. I never could get all of that grease off. It seemed to have bonded to the finish on the very porous roof and a few other places. Also, lots of rust and corrosion here and there. I guess kitchens are very humid places too? Willie X

Nice looking resto Willie!
Wow. What did you end up using? Whatever it was it cut right through it. Now I'm picturing an 80s dishwashing soap commercial and Willie in yellow dish gloves. Was it, "tough on grease but not on your hands?" . Seriously it can't be the same clock!
