• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Hello again
I just picked up this French Japy movement, mainly because it was there!
I have tried to date it myself but my findings suggest that its 1850's but to be honest I think I am wrong, too clean and shiny? It is very clean but unfortunately there is a nasty chip( repaired) in the enamel face.
I am also assuming that the suspension is clamped in between the two brass plates?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Philip

Phillip,
According to "Dating French Clocks Using Physical Parts – Suspension, Striking, and Exposition Medaillions" by Scotty Dean, the suspension is
"Vallet Suspension = upper portion of the suspension spring is completely enclosed as two brass halves that slot
and screw together. Appears mid 19th century."

Based on the Medaillion on the movement verses those shown in the aforementioned work, I believe it was won in 1867 but I could be wrong.

Hope this helps a little.

One source has Japy et Cie, formed in 1854, has having been awarded that medal in 1855 and 67. The same source claims this medal was used from 1855 to around 1888 but other markings have been seen on their movements in that period so determining when these medals were used and for how long appears to be unclear. The other mark on the backplate is most likely that of a finisher who bought in a roulant (unfinished movement) from Japy.

I have a decent case that's been collecting dust for a while now looking for a movement. But the opening is in the 4" range, don't remember exactly.
