Just an appreciation thread for Winterhalder & Hofmeier Clocks

Recently took out my 3 train W&H Westminster chiming clock's movement, since it is overdue for a teardown and servicing (been running well, but needs to be cleaned). I'm always blown away by the construction quality of these movements and their rock-solid reliability. Anyhow, I just figured I'd make a short post showing off the movement before I service it since there's not to many images of these on the web.

Nice to see a detailed view of the W&H three train movement. There isn't much technical information about W&H's springwind chime movements but they took a lot of inspiration from J. J. Elliott. I don't have a W&H in my collection but many other collectors have noted their solid quality and reliability.

You can tell the movement was a tight fit in its case with how the case paneling had to be gouged out to accommodate the hammer return springs, and the gong pedestal was adjusted inward so the gongs had room to resonate.

having been around clocks for most of my life, the one thing that triggers me is hearing chimes or gongs out of speakers in new clocks. yuck. Nothing beats the sound of an actual rod, bell or tube .

Isaac, I have the same movement in a bracket clock. If you a going to service the movement and you happen to remove the springs fo cleaning woud you measure them for me. The spring in the chime side of my movement is so strong I can hardly wind it. It is a lovely movement. I have attached photos of mine.

Hey Tim,

Will do. The chiming spring on my movement is also extremely strong - pretty much feels like winding a Sonora mainspring without the gearing reduction to help. You can see by the enlarged winding click mechanism that these mainsprings are no joke at all.
