I LOVE my newest clock. I bought it on EBay and it came from the Netherlands. It's a beautiful clock with a thermometer and barometer in it. The glass is all beveled. The clock is in really good shape but, as you can see, the face is not in good shape. It looks like someone tried to clean it and maybe took the finish off of it. I don't know if there is anything I can do to fix it or should I just leave it alone? I has a beautiful Westminster chime and hour gong. It has 8 hammers and 8 gongs. Just beautiful. Can anyone put a date on it?

Oh, by the way, don't know how effective the thermometer and barometer will be, the thermometer is only in Celcius and the barometer is in German!

I would date your Hamburg American clock from the 1920's, but this is only a guess.

Your clock seems to be quite a mixture. The movement is marked with the crossed arrows of HAC (Hamburg America Clock Co.). The dial also has the same mark, together with a name which is probably the retailer in Paris. So it would appear that HAC made the movement and the dial. But, HAC was taken over by Junghans in 1930. The crossed arrow mark was registered by HAC in the 1890s and re-registered to Junghans in 1924 (Mikrolisk). So it may well be a Junghans movement with the HAC mark.

The case has the Junghans badge, so may originally have had an earlier Junghans movement as the case is more typical of the late 19th/early 20th century. It's a nice case. It does not look like a case from the 1930s.

The movement, or at least the dial, that is presently in your clock does not look of the same age as the case. The dial is typical of a German box clock of the 1920s/1930s (many of these were made by HAC/Junghans and others) and seems completely out of keeping with the case. However, it fits well. Are there any signs of the movement having been replaced, such as extra screw holes in the back board etc? It may be that something happened to the original dial and/or movement and, for whatever reason, was replaced b y a later version. That is just conjecture on my part.

There seem to be more questions than answers! I shall be very interested to hear what other more knowledgeably people may think about it.

By the way, the barometer is labelled in French, not German.

Yes, I agree with JTD, there are unsolved questions.

But I have no doubt, the movement is by HAC pre 1914. And the case might be French.

Thank you for the information. I didn't see any holes in the back of the clock. There are a couple interesting things in the clock case. There is a small board that goes across the inside of the case that the movement sits on. There are a couple of nuts through that board that can be loosened to allow the movement to be moved forward and backward inside the case.
There are two strings that come down each side of the movement with a loop at the end of each that can be hooked over a couple of hooks on the inside of the case to shut the chimes off.

This is called the seat board. It is very usual in many wall clocks.

Very nice old clock. The dial can be refinished if you prefer. Personally I like it the way it is.
You could have it restored or do it yourself:

The case is french,the style is called "Henry II revival",kind of Neorenaissance,in fashion in the 30ies in France.Goole for pics and You´ll find loads of furniture and clocks,the slender double collums are one characteristic feature . The Movement is a HAC type,probably made after the Junghans take-over and exported to France since the german movements were cheaper than the french competitors (which were of better quality).
Re the dial:it looks like silvered-which is easy to redo Yourselv-with the numerals silkscreened on it-not so easy to redo Yourselv.
As long as I see no proof of a movement swab I have no problem regarding this clock as entirely original.I like the style,and the cases are of much better workmanship than their german contemporaries.Congrats!

As noted above, the movement (W64) was made by Junghans during the 1930s. Junghans was still producing HAC branded movements throughout the 1930s, they wasted nothing when it came to reusing and developing upon old HAC movement patterns.

It's not an uncommon case style but it is a little more unusual to find these clocks with barometers and thermometers built in.
