Here is another cool little clock I inherited from my Grandfather. It’s a Jerome & Co. Carriage Clock. I’m intrigued by the inscriptions on the upper frame of the back door and the bottom. The upper back door has “3.50”, which I’m assuming was the price. The bottom has two inscriptions. I can’t make out all of it, but one appears to have the date “6/93”, and the other looks like “8/04”.

I would greatly appreciate any input on your interpretations of the inscriptions and possibly what the significance of the two dates might be.

Obviously, the clock is missing the alarm bell on the bottom and the original winding key that would’ve resided in the clip pictured on the base. If anyone has either of those parts, I would gladly purchase them. PM me if you think you might have what I’m looking for.

Probably marks inscribed by repairman. Not of any significance that I know of.

Possibly, though I don't think many retailers scratched the price onto their clocks. More likely the price due for a repair.

Thanks for sharing your clock. There are a few threads here on the message board about these clocks that might be helpful. You can try searching something like Jerome carriage in all forums.

Are you sure this has an alarm, rather than just striking the hours? How would you set the alarm?

It seems odd to me that any reputable repairman would permanently scribe anything on to a piece they worked on for a customer.

Great point. I hadn’t thought about that. You must be correct!

Oh, they do, they do! When you have collected a little longer you will find that many, many clocks (and watches) have repair marks on them.

    Sad, perhaps, but true.

Generally it is on the back of the dial, or maybe in/on the case, but not so obvious as you see on this carriage clock or on watches. Not to digress, but in the past watchmakers put a watchpaper inside the case. On one side was an advertisement for their establishment, while if the watch had been in for service, the other side might have the date, the price, the work that was done, the owner's name, etc. Some used codes that might have aligned with their record books, or for different types of repairs. Below is an example from Eben Whitney of Norwalk CT. If only these timepieces and the associated "stuff" could talk!

Here is a thread that includes some interesting written "additions" on clocks. There are others on the message board, but this one will give you any idea.
