Jeannot & Shiebler (J&S) was one of the very best U.S. casemakers, making only solid gold cases. It began operations in the early 1880s and was bought by the Dubois Watch Case Company in 1904. See https://mb.nawcc.org/showwiki.php?title=Jeannot_and_Shiebler. Because this NAWCC encylopedia entry does not show any examples of J&S cases, several of us thought it would worthwhile to post examples of J&S's fine work. Please post examples from your collection.

I will start with three examples:

14k Bingham & Walk PL Patek Philippe -- Case number 66,678 (same as watch) with an 1888 inscription

18k Jaques & Marcus PL Patek Philippe -- Case #75,707 (same as watch), with 1888 inscription

14k unsigned Agassiz -- Case #33,750, with 1886 inscription

Great watch, John. Because you like the Bingham & Walk, here are photos of the cuvette and the movement. Any idea who Mr. Shearer was?

Jeannot & Schiebler are among my favorite casemakers as well. Their cases are always very solidly made and they appear to have been the casemaker of choice for the finer imported and complicated watches. It is a common feature to see the movement number matched in the case.

Although this example is very plain, I think it is important in that I believe it serves as a key to identifying other unsigned cases by J&S. The "JS" monogram is, of course, distinctive and a clear indication of who made the case. However, there are some additional finish characteristics that, I believe, also point to Jeannot & Schiebler. The first is their karat mark. In addition to the karat number flanking the JS monogram, they often also had the karat value in a unique 8-cusped shield, as on this example. I have also noticed the subtle snailing inside the cuvette which forms a rayed pattern from the hinge with dots at the ends of the rays. I call this a peacock-eye pattern.

How has this been useful? I find that a great many of the watches from Bigelow, Kennard & Co., a respected Boston jeweler, are in very well-made cases marked with the jeweler's name but no casemaker. However, these cases bear these other characteristics that I believe indicate that J&S were their source. I also note that the cases made for BK&Co. are mostly in their own serial number sequence - a custom feature that also suggests a custom casemaker like J&S. The following side-by-side images show a BK&Co case on the left and an identified J&S case on the right.

J&S was used by many jewelers to case many fine Swiss movements since tariffs were high for gold cased watches. Here a heavy near 8 size Agassiz with fine engraving, and flat internal surfaces that reflect undistorted images. The bow has hard alloy inside for wear resistance. art

Art and John, the watch I identified as an Agassiz in my first posting is also around an 8-size. Its unsigned movement is similar to the movement in Art's watch, but with some significant differences. I would be grateful if you or other Agassiz experts would let me know whether my watch indeed is an Agassiz.

Here are three more J&S-cased watches from my collection.

14k Bailey, Banks & Biddle PL C.H. Meylan, ladies size, J&S case #87,864-84

18k C.H. Meylan #37 in J&S case #79,822-37 (In post 10, I incorrectly identified a C.H. Meylan rattrapante as having this case number and included the inside cover shot below. The correct case number of that rattrapante is 49,936-228.)

Well selected interesting variety of finest p.w. cases. As a limited collector of multicolor gold cased watches I have seen only one J&S as shown here. I read in old advertising first mc cases U.S. made were from J&S. Ethan; seen any? art

My one and only J&S cased watch. It is about a 16S Vacheron-Constantin, #262,927 adjusted in an exhibition 14K triple-hinged HC waiting for some initials or other personalized engraving? The case number is 36941-28, and I am aware that the regulator is not centered, but this is how it was returned from my Ohio Amish watch repairman. It required a new mainspring which when having it apart, I discovered it was beyond my repair skills. The mainspring arbor is only supported on one end. Brad Maisto, Chapter 44 member.

Nice looking case
I would think this would be risqué for the watches time frame

Since the link to the Jeannot & Shiebler Encyclopedia article no longer works, here's a new link: Jeannot & Shiebler.

terrific thread! J&S without doubt is one of the finest yet most unheralded American Watch Case Companies. (Likely because some many were Swiss import movements.). I have severla BALL watches with J&S cases.
