Jauch BPH

I just finished repair to an older Jauch movement out of an Emporer clock. It's running perfectly with a good beat and keeping accurate time. Just to fine tune it, I checked the BPH with my timer and it's reading 4060 on the button. The book says 3600 for the triple chime or 4571.4 for the "chain pull weight." The movement is stamped 77 10 75 and a possible serial number of 352662. Can anyone tell me what the correct BPH for this movement is? Pendulum is 64 cm. Thanks.

In my post I said I'd "just finished repair." The movement is on my test stand and is keeping accurate time for the last 5 hours. That's by eye-balling the movement without the dial attached and for much less time than anyone would test a movement. So, I'd still like to know what the correct BPH is so I can fine tune it.

According to Jeff Hamiltons beat book Jauch didn't have a 64cm pend. It does list the BPH for a 61cm pend at 4572 which is pretty close to your 4571.4 Set it up for a 61cm pend and adjust the old fashioned way. If you've got a digital clock with seconds display you'll be able to get it perfect within a few hours of running.

There were several Jauch companies. One did indeed produce a 64cm unit. We have carried a retrofit for it for years. It,is just not as common as the others.

While the tables are great, the old fashioned way of counting pinions and wheel teeth and doing the math never fail for me.

I'm lazy, too. That's why I have a Timetrax. But since I can't find and nobody has the info., I'll take your advice and watch it for a week or so and adjust as necessary. Thanks, Shutterbug.

If your timetrax has a beat counting option, you can set it for that and let the clock run about three times around the dial. Then divide the number of beats counted by the number of times around the dial, and you'll have an accurate BPH for the clock. It doesn't matter if the pendulum is on or off.

Count the teeth, if you are ready to invest the time. In my shop beat counters are used very little and then only for ball park stuff like on pendulum replacements and 400 day suspension spring replacements. Time is money, Willie X

I use My Microset to set the BPH when doing house calls.
The Rating rod broke in a customers move, I replaced the rod at my shop and taking back to the clock and reinstalling the pendulum & would like to set the BPH at the time of installation.
77 is stamped on the movement.
I am going to set the BPH to 4050, Then walk him through the adjustment over the next few days.
And give him this print out.

Willie, Not doubting you but I don't quite understand what you mean that 4050 is only good for coarse adjustment

A clock's rate is in a constant state of variation. So, your beat counter is only telling you a tiny fraction of the story ... Fine rate adjustments can only be made after several 'normal full cycles'. This is usually a week to week thing for most clocks.

Also, it's not much need to fine adjust a pendulum clock in your shop because moving it back to where it normally lives will usually change the rate. I usually send them home when the rate is inside of one minute per day. There are exceptions, like balance wheel clocks, which are often hard for the customer to adjust and usually travel well.
