Is there any way of dating McCabe clocks roughly by signature?

I have seen suggestions the signature changes according to quality.

I was looking at a dial clock signed Jas McCabe London, so no address, James senior died about 1812 I think, was there a known period for signature of just Jas McCabe London?

Here's one example. I would guess around 1790.

Its a bit of a long shot, but at a Regional show/exhibit a few months ago was a vendor with several very nice McCabe clocks. Several had a street on the dial if memory serves.

You might track down the vendor by contacting the President of Chapter 190 which hosted the show (Ventura, Calif). Here is his email (Mostyn Gale): clocks@saving-time.org

    Good luck,
    Jim

It is certainly more common to have an address, he was in Exchange Alley for quite a while.

I am interested in this as well as I have a Mc Cabe movement that needs its dial repainting. There is not enough of the signature left for the address, just enought to know that it probably matches the engraving on the back plate (Royal exchange) Another possibility i thought of is to google images of mc cabe clocks and date them roughly from the case and hand styles. I am pretty sure I havent seen any thing recently that positively identifies his signatures with his dates.

Time for just a quick word.

Another friend and member has joined this site who is into McCabes. He has made a database of McCabe CLOCKS (just like what Hackamack has done for watches) by taking all clocks' pictures from past few decades of sales. His database would help in dating McCabe clocks, I guess.

    Hope he chimes in.

    Thanks

I have a condition report on this clock with pictures of the movement. He might find it useful.

That is a nice dial clock and pretty early as dial clocks go from the very narrow surround. Though as I understand it, I wouldn't call it a drop dial, Still very nice, that dial would look a treat when restored.

You can tell by the guide price that clocks aren't their thing, and no, it isn't a drop dial.

It's why I was interested in dating by signature, it is an early design though iron dial not wood and anchor not verge. The guy was dead not long after this was made.
