In a clock thread I am reporting about a previously quite sad Isaac Rogers lantern clock for the ottoman market, which I am restoring/repairing. The clock is nearly finished and I will report.

By coincidence I recently discovered this pocket watch by Isaac Rogers, which makes a nice match. It is nothing special, aside the signature (and it´s relevance for me) and the really brilliant and original condition. Thanks to Cogs and Pieces!

Isaac Rogers (1) London. 1748-76.

Isaac Rogers (11) Londom (Gracechurch Street) .b 1754, son of Isaac Rogers (1), q,v., CC1776-d1839.

Isaac Rogers (11?) London, (bell Alley) (near Bank) 1817

Isaac Rogers (11?) London, (Whit Hart Court, Lombard Street) c1780-95

Brian Loomes.

I could not read the hallmarks but would go to Isaac Rogers (11) So at least the same family.

Nice watch Bernard.

R/

Allan.

PS; I tried the hallmarks again, Looks like Thomas Carpenter was the case maker, he made cases for Brockbank. The first page of my Brockbank File.
Looks like the A for 1794.

Hi Allan,

Thank you!
I would also guess Isaac Rogers II. I agree with the "A", but would rather suggest 1796.

Cheers, Bernhard

P.S.: I still need to send two items to the Münsterland, it is not forgotten

Bernhard,
If you have an interest, here is an bit earlier example of an Issac Rogers… A smaller watch,
45mm across the outside case, 37 mm dial.. Housed in a gilt single case with what appears to be a pinned under painted horn rear cover & front bezel … Nice dial, but I suspect it has been replaced or refinished at some point .. Typical verge escapement …..

Bernard,

There is a whole series of these verges all with 1796/97 London hallmarked cases with an interesting story ...
The legend is that at the end of World War II, in 1946, the Red Cross were collecting watches, jewellery and other small precious items to trade for money to aid their causes. Within the vast quantity of goods collected, was a box full of watches signed Isaac Rogers, originally destined for the Ottoman Empire, and undiscovered for over 100 years.
The above taken from the description, by Christies in 2009, of a fine silver triple case verge watch, made for the Turkish market by Isaac Rogers.

I described my example here. Many of the examples are 'mint' condition.

Hi John,

My eyes are becoming old (and not only the eyes), but it seems to me the signature says "Roberts", and not "Rogers"?

However, a lovely watch and with unusual front winding.

Hi John P,
I am quite sure many noticed Isaac Roberts watch and stayed quiet, to let Bernard answer. When I looked at it this morning and saw the Roberts name, I had to look him up. Loomes has him at London,(Compton Street) 1762 d. 1774. Though looking at the cock, my feelings were, it must be older.

Nice watch,

Allan.

A very clean condition Issac Rogers number 19919 (hallmark 1796) with original watch paper by him sold this morning for a much larger than expected amount of 1000 GBP (without commission).

These three photographs are those from a Mendip Auction Rooms sale today and the hammer price was £1000, the estimate was typically low £100 - £200!
