The 472 21J (1923-1927) is the first(and only) Elgin B.W. Raymond to get the invar with marking on the dial.
There is a Railroaders article by Kent and Ed about it, I will look to see
which one. The 372 did not have one. You have a 472 dial on it.

This is not the typical one that you see, you see many more
without a Montgomery dial.

As mentioned in another thread, an Invar/brass balance wheel will have the cut in the rim further out from the arm than a standard steel/brass balance wheel. My example here is from a Hamilton 922 Masterpiece.
I would think your Elgins with the marked dials should have a similar balance wheel.

Music guy - is/was this dial also used (even as an option) on the Elgin 16s 23j 540? It has an Invar balance according to the literature.

The Elgin 540 (1938-1941) as I understand it never had that marking
on the dial.

It's cut in two places, here is the close up

PS look at all the work someone did on the balanceo_O but it runs perfectly.
I will not change a thing.

Well, one of mine has one. (Must've been changed by a previous owner or jeweler.) Although otherwise, it's as original as it gets. Wonder if Elgin or shrewd jewelers actually offered it as an option, since it's a really nice Montgomery-type dial. Has anyone ever seen one on another 540?

I would say that you have a switched dial(and hands seem short). A very common practice
done by dealers and collectors over the years not knowing or caring if
it was original at that time for the watch.
