Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself and didn't see a specific forum for that type of message. I'm just starting out on my path to formal watch repair education and was told this should be one of my first steps. I've been poking around here and have been slowly obtaining parts, tools, and knowledge over the past year or so. I recently enrolled in an online class as there are no watchmaking schools near me. I do plan on doing some in-person education in the coming years but right now, I just can't travel and stay due to family timing. (I'm 46 and have a son just starting to drive. OMG what am I doing?)

So that's it for now. Thanks for having me, I hope to be around for some time!

Welcome to the amazing world of portable time machines of old. There's a good bunch here on the NAWCC forum. Most, if not all, are always happy to answer all sorts of questions, and at all hours.

Ah...to be 46 again...It's a real plus if your eyes are pretty good, and you don't require reading glasses yet. You're right on the edge of the upper range for needing them. Still, it's handy to learn before needing them for everything small and close, but not necessary.

I'm sure that you already know that good tweezers and good screwdrivers are a must. Other things you can get by with for a while going with lesser quality. Best of luck.

Welcome to this addictive occupation.

A few things opened my eyes on watch repair.

One wants to be educated on how each part supposed to function, fit, look, and be repaired if need be, including diagnosis.

A microscope taught me that my prior servicing didn't help improve the watch's function at all.

Horology taught me, if I'm not educated enough on the repair I'm thinking to attempt then stay the hell away from it til I do get educated, including tools.

Hands on experience has taught me a lot of what "NOT" to do.

These guys on here will help you along as they have me and many others.

Good luck...Roger

Hi

Welcome to you.

I am no professional watch maker but enjoy discussing with the people on here.

I am a bit curious how you decided to start watch making now

I think that I have done so many things on the side that are mechanical in nature, this seemed like the "Ultimate form" of expression. I have always been into building and taking things apart, working with electronics at a young age. Then as a teen I started with cars, then motorcycles, then moved to gunsmithing, so I figured watch were next!

I do find myself scowering the net for pictures and videos before I take something apart, and if I can't find it I'll ask or take lots of my own pictures.

I appreciate any and all tips at this point. Thanks for commenting.
