I found this clock about 6 months ago and it's time to clean it up. How do you handle these powerful springs? I can barely get a turn started with this setup. This won't work in my Ollie Baker. I don't have a tool that fits it with a 1/4" end on it. Thanks, Danny

I have one of those clocks on my wall. It takes a T-handled winder. You need a lot of torque to wind them. If I remember right I had to replace one of the springs. I was much younger then. I am now just shy of 81 and can barely wind it for a few day’s run. You also need to wind both springs to get it to run properly. Peter

Wouldn't a ratchet handle from your socket set work better than the screwdriver handle you have tried?

I'm trying to figure out how to let it down into a piece of baling wire for disassembly.

Does the second spring turn the lower unit? Is yours functional? I'm missing the rod that goes to the bottom. I'm looking for a place to lay the parts out to rebuild the bottom end. I need a large table for a long time.
Mine is very close to the same as yours.

Both springs are turning the second wheel. Mine is running, fully wound. I have the rod assy disconnected. If I remember right I let it down by disconnecting the escapement and just let it run down. Not sure if I used wire or a large mspg c-clamp. Peter

How did you handle the spring to clean it? I don't have any way to put it in my winder. I'm not sure the winder could handle it. Thanks for the help. Danny

Frankly, I don’t remember how I did the mspgs. I have a Marvel Winder that I got in the early 1970’s. It’s pretty beefy. The only spring I couldn’t use it for was a music box machine that was the size of a jukebox. Like a 5 inch barrel.

Not to tell you what to do. I have used a large GOOD stainless hose clamp. Be careful they are powerful.

I was given the upper half of this ITR to repair. Lower half had been seperated and lost. I used the T-handle, very carefully, 1/2 turn at a time to let down the spring into C-clamps. The largest ones I had fit great.

Btw it was also missing the Geneva Stops, if that's what they're called on this clock. ended up making templates and hand cut/filed new stops and stop keepers, the long plates that keep the arbor wheel for the stop in place. Finished off making a new bottom for the clock.

Did you get the movement apart? Be careful with the verge / escape wheel. The heel has long teeth and can bend over pretty easy. The other thing is if you are not going to use the recorder you can replace the MS with much lighter ones.
