Intermittent Strike

Had a call today. This person has an Ansonia 8 day Time and Strike and after a day being fully wound it will quit striking until he takes the winding key and turns it slightly and then it will strike. It will then strike for a few hours and then stop again.

What does this sound like?

sounds like its binding - tightness at or near the mainwheel.

Seems it's loosing power somewhere.
Bushings, pivots, bent pinions, tight meshing, grime...
maybe even just a scraping fly.
Guess the whole train has to checked(?)

Could be any of those things even a burr on a bushing.

Could be a sticking mainspring, too. I believe moving the key slightly is the key to the problem. (All puns are strictly intentional.)

Yeah; Not really enuff info to make more definitive prognoses. When it does this - is it fully wound - partially wound - near the end of wind?
I'll bet you wouldn't even have to turn the key past the click.

I'd start with a clean, if it hasn't been done in the last ten years or so.
Especially if it's a spring-driven one (is it?).
