• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

I just wanted to post a few pics of this clock so there is a record of it. It’s not mine but the lady wanted me to look at it because it stopped chiming. Turned out to be fuzz or fine hair bound up in the governor. I couldn’t find info about it anywhere, so I figured I’d share it. I’d like to give her an idea of the date it was made if anyone may have an idea.

It is marked Japy Freres, so the movement is French, so that is something to tell the lady. It's an unusual case, rather hard to date, I would guess 1870-80
but others may be able to give a better estimate.

It never had a chime, only a strike, which would be another thing to explain to the lady.

Others may know more.

according to N. Thorpe´s "The french Marble Clock" this special stamp was used after 1880 so this clock is not earlier than that date. IMO between 1880-1900 per the style of the case. Verry nice quality clock , rack strike that cannot go out of sync , a fortune !

Thanks for the info. Ive shared with her what the members here shared with me that i posted about a few of her clocks. She went from being afraid to wind her decorative clocks to being totally fired up and has a big interest in them. She now has 4 out of 6 running. All ive done is teach her about how to make sure they are in beat, how to adjust the speed, and things to look out for. It all started when she was told by another person that i might be willing to hang a 3 weight that for her that she had just bought.

It is an unusual case, rather like a cross between a four glass clock and a marble clock.

It is marked Japy Freres
JTD,
I'm not seeing what you clearly see. Can you please share where/what markings show this is a Japy Freres.
Much appreciation for the lesson.

Look at the round stamp on the back plate (pic. #3), just by the crutch. The writing says 'Japy Freres'.

Oh yes, clear as a bell now, thank you. I don't know how I missed it.
