Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

I have a nice Seth Thomas movement Pat.1875. It is the movement with the harp shaped plates. I just received it and found that the escape wheel was included, but not installed. When I tried to install it, I found that the latern gear does not line up and the escape wheel is actually too large to clear the outer arm. Obviously the wrong wheel, but, what wheel do I need. This one has 37 teeth. Photo links below:

Hi Tom T-

The Seth Thomas lyre movements had several different layouts. My records show one that had an escape wheel with 36 teeth and another model that had 44. If your movement came with a pendulum you could measure it to get a pendulum length and back into how many leaves the pinion should have and how many teeth the escape wheel would need. I think the formula is on the Message Board somewhere.

Good luck with it!

David.

Thanks to both Phil and David. I appreciate the quick, friendly, help you folks offer.

David, the 36 tooth escape wheel sounds closer to correct, but the misalignment of the latern gear and the current 37 tooth escape wheel (which won't clear the are) both have me concerned. Obviously, I need some more research before starting on this movement.

I'll likely be asking for more help and information as I get into it.

Thanks again !
Tom T

Hi Tom T-

I just noticed you are in Scottsdale, AZ. There is a clockmaker close by who can help you with your escape wheel problem. He may even have what you need.

Hey Tom T-

Thanks for the picture! Your movement is of course a Seth Thomas, Time/Strike/Alarm. The escape wheel, however, is off of something that would have had a second hand (notice the long front pivot) and would be either dead beat or half-dead beat by the rake of the teeth. My best guess is the escape wheel is off of an Ansonia "Capitol" since that is the only one I can think of that had a second hand and 37 teeth. If you could tell me how many wires on the pinion I may be able to confirm it.

David.

Hi David,
Thanks for the ongoing help. The pinion has 8 teeth(wires). I noticed the long back-side pivot and looked for someplace where the gearing for a second hand would have attached and found none.

I guess I had better start looking for a proper escape wheel, shaft and pinion.

Regards,
Tom T

Hi Tom T-

I'm reasonably sure that your escape wheel is from an Ansonia "Capitol" since it has a tooth and pinion count of 37 and 8 respectively. Unfortunately, I don't know any where I could send you for old parts so you can get the right escape wheel. I do know that Mr. Faier can make you a new one if that is an option for you.

Good luck with it! David.
