Can anyone tell me the highest known 163A serial number? I see in Meggers’ Illinois book that the highest known number at the time was 5,563,281. I am in the process of buying a 163A and the seller has told me that the serial number is 5,563,344 but I haven’t seen the watch yet.

Thanks,

Bruce

hi Bruce,

that run is 5563001 - 5564000 so that example falls in that range..

this is from page 417 of the Illinois encyclopedia by Meggers and Ehrhardt.

the run is noted as at least one example being seen from it.. [a check mark]
This appears to be the last run, as following runs are 161a and b and smaller sized watches.

The highest 163A we have in our database is 5,563,354, so the serial number on your watch seems reasonable.

Terry, I can't find any check mark on page 417; the last type II P entry is under the 201-300 column and nothing under the 301-400 column. Is there more than one edition of the book?

Thanks to both of you for the help.

Bruce,
you must be looking at TABLE VIII, THE SERIAL NUMBER DISTRUBUTION OF GRADES 163, AND 163A

This table is on page 117 of my copy of the 'bible'.

My version is first printing, 1985... in my notes in the book text, I have noted a date of 10-2002 for seeing one of the numbers I stated in my post above.. so this was a 'new' discovery, as your example is.

In my copy of the book, on page 417, the run is as stated in my post above.. and Bill had a check mark beside the run..

I can tell you that there has been much additional information since the book was published. Through efforts of many Illinois collectors that post here and exchange information, additional runs of many grades have turned up.

There is some work being done to have an updated version of the book in some form which will reflect many changes. The timetable for publication is not set in stone at this time.... nor is the form of publication.. [book, cd-rom, or other media]
