I have put this 18s Illinois Bunn Special private label on my website. http://www.interstatetime.com/WatchOTM/WmEarle_Big.htm

Does anybody have any information about the private label "Wm. G. Earle - Philadelphia, Pa." or has anyone seen any other watches marked like this?

Thanks,

John Cote

John,

Fo waht it's worth, Aurora watches with this name on them have also been reported.

Thanks Greg. That is the kind of information I am looking for. Just out of curiosity, were they high grade Auroras?

John,

A quick scan of my Aurora data turned up a grade 113-Htg marked Earle, Philadelphia. Grade 113 was a nickel adjusted mvt (RR grade). I was a little below the grade 8 and a lot below the grade 10 (15 Ruby Jewel).

Wm. G. Earle had good taste in Illinois watches, besides the one John pictured above I have seen four others marked for him and all were 18 size Bunn Specials.

Of these one was identical to what John pictured, one was a 21 jewel with gold circular damaskeen pattern, one was a 21 jewel with the scarce all over gold (7th) damaskeen pattern, and the other was a 24 jewel.

The Earle name is also found on Seth Thomas watches.

I am pretty sure that the Earle on Seth Thomas was a grade name rather than a private label. i.e. no town, just the name.

I'd have to disagree Tom, as the dials on these Seth Thomas I've seen are signed "Earle" but the movements are more specific and signed "Earle, Philadelphia".

I'm attaching a photo here of a 16 size Illinois dial marked for Earle.

It has the feet positions for the early (pre-1896) thicker 16 size Illinois models 1, 2, and 3. The dial is also unusual in that the hour numerals and associated tracks are in blue, and the minute numbers are in a gold foil (which doesn't show real well in this photo).

Wish I knew which grade of 16 size Illinois movement this was originally paired with, but unfortunately it came to me as a loose dial.

The Seth Thomas that I had with the Earle name, dial signed Earle and the movement had both name and city..A serial number from around 1890...Mdl 3 open face..not sure on the jewel count..but no more than 15..
