Nice one Dave, it is fun to see these gussied-up mid grades with high jewel counts. They are almost always low production. You can see the mid grade roots in the jewel settings, ratchet wheel and click, and regulator parts, I do see gold screws in balance.

232477 - 'Forrest, Springfield, Ill.', model 2, grade 101, 11 jewel, DS dial.

Compared to another 'Forrest' in my collection, but this one marked Cincinnati, Ohio (SN 207521). I pulled both barrel bridges and they are correct. Both have double sunk dials which is somewhat unusual for the grade 101. Perhaps Illinois made some for a retailer and liked it enough to make some for their own sales. Or, perhaps, a cancelled order?

I was looking for info on an 1888 Cogswell & Wallis watch catalog from Chicago and found a page from another of their catalogs that showed a cut of one of their pl Illinois watches. It is marked only “King” and C W intertwined on the barrel bridge. The ser. no. Is indiscernible but I thought the info might be helpful to ID one of these watches.-Cort

Interesting that they list the grade 105 in their price list. I wonder if there is a C&W/King marked 105 out there someplace, waiting to be discovered? I have never seen a grade 105 private label.

Anyway, thanks for posting this, Cort. It's always fun to 'solve' another monogram.

Joe,
That is outstanding. What a nice watch all around.

You could give the Crawford county historical society an email. I haven't dealt with them yet, but have had some good experiences with other historical societies in western pa.

This was neat. First hit from Google

His business address in Titusville in the 1870s was 19 spring st.

Here is one I picked up today. I have not seen this one before and though I look at most of this thread, if there is one already posted I have not seen it. The dial looks better in this picture than it really is. It does have some of the typical hairlines you usually find in these fancy dials and a little chip at the lever. The case is goldfilled. All in all a nice watch though.

That is a really great looking grade 65, I did look up the Private label

I apologize if this has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet, but is there documentation on prices Illinois (and not to go too off topic, Hamilton) charged for their Private Labels? 14eda6c87316ed6572fe03188be4d23e.jpeg

I can't remember where I found this but, in my Private Label presentation, I had written that Illinois charged a dollar for a private label marked dial and nothing for a private label marked movement. My understanding is that Hamilton was the opposite - a dollar for the movement and nothing for the dial.

505497 - 'John B. Bergmann', model 2, grade 65, 17 jewels (database says 15J)
I love this watch and thee 65 may be my favorite grade. There are so many great variations and rule breakers in this almost Bunn grade. Maybe someday you will stumble across the appropriate dial in one of your drawers of stuff.
