Illinois Grade 181 & 189 side by side

    Finally I was able to find and purchase an Illinois Grade 181. Since the 181 and 189 are known to look alike, I wanted to share a side by side, sorry, scanning isn't as good as pictures but my camera skills suffer.

    Meggers stated the grades were really not distinguishable except for serial number.... this seems true in your images,
    have you a chance to concentrate with a loupe for any finish differences?

    Appears some difference between the two, the design on the balance cock and the dial plate damaskeening on the dial side of the plate:)

    I would be willing to make a small wager that those same differences may be found on two examples of the same grade for either 181 or 189.

    That is why Bill had to stare at so many to decide. :)
