Hi

I recently bought an Ansonia marble/slate mantle clock, as shown in the pics. The movement is marked "Ansonia Clock Co., New York, U.S.A" but there are no other markings (apart from a "5") or labels. The clock measures approx. 44cm (W) x 32 (H) x 13 (D).

I gather from researching that most of the NY Ansonia clocks were made between 1883 and 1929, but I wondered if anyone could please advise on a more specific date, plus possibly a model name? I found an old catalogue from about 1915 but can't find this clock in there.

Also I've seen online that some NY movements are stamped with an 1882 patent date, but this one isn't - not sure if that helps with the dating.

Thanks in advance.
David

It looks like it could be that one, but the decorations on mine are slightly different and it doesn't have the wheel on the dial. May just be a variation?

It was an option as listed below the picture. The “wheel” would be “visible escapement”.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if it was an option or a standard feature, because I thought the only options were "Arabic or roman" for the numerals.

Are you sure the visible escapement was an option? As I read it, the only options are the type of numerals.

Others may know for sure, but that's how I read it.

Hi, seems like it says porcelain visible escapement?

It says 'porcelain visible escapement dial'. It doesn't look to me as if it were an option, I think the clock was supplied with a visible escapement. (if it were an option, I think there would be two prices, one for each type).

But, as always, I may be wrong.

OH! Got it! So is a "visible escapement dial" just one of those two-part stepped dials? Those "High/low" looking dials? (That could be cut here and there to be adapted to an open escapement type movement?)

Nearly. The list says 'porcelain visible escapement dial'; that is a porcelain dial, with a visible escapement. Your clock hasn't got these features, and, as has been said earlier, it may not be an El Pino.

(Hi JTD, just for the record, I am not the owner of the clock, just a nosy bystander ha ha)

To confuse things further, there's a clock here which is described as El Pino. While the dial's the same as mine, the markings on the case are slightly different to mine but match the El Pino example given above.

I believe some makers reused model names or changed them a bit. Such as changing the name for a later model and changing the style a bit.
