Hi,
Have an English Clock for service and interested in the brand (manufacturer)
The clock is a mantle t&s with recoil escapement - has 'Croydon England' stamped on the back with an s/n 4013.The actual brand marking has been obliterated by an over engraving.
Have included front and back pictured

I wonder whether this might be by F.W. Elliott, LTD, given the Croydon address. They incorporated Gillett & Johnston in 1923. Can you make out anything of the obliterated marking? Might it be Gillett & Johnston?

Hi again,
This obliteration seems to be done professionally maybe at the factory - can't make out too much - but the cast two letters look like a small 'l' and a large 'l' in a script format - looks like a job for the forensics - I have taken a photo close up with the light at an angle to best show the manufacturer - some of the letters can be seen

As suggested it was made by Elliott who used the brand name 'Imperial' on some clocks. The movement matches the post-war 8 day striking clock introduced in 1949 which used pendulum escapements but by the mid-1950s they were then all made with platform escapements so this one dates to before then. This movement isn't one of the original Imperial range introduced in the 1930s but obviously the brand name was used on it.

Yes, if you enlarge the photo, the word Imperial is clearly visible beneath the scratchings.

I also saw the word "Imperial" when adjusted in a photo program. What could be the reason why the name was scratched out?
