Hi all,
I have a Cuckoo Clock for restoration, fitted with a Hubert Herr movement, and naturally want to replace with the exact same movement.
However with reference to the Black Forest Imports catalogue it shows type AM60 as the only 30 hour movement remotely similar to the one fitted to this clock.
However the plate size is shown as 62 X 68 mm, where the unit in this clock has a plate size of 75.5 X 79 mm. with a very different plate layout.
Which, I assume would mean that the hole centres in the case would not line up with the new replacement.
I have included a picture of the original movement for reference. Does anyone know if this original has been replaced with the smaller type, or is there a possible replacement for this clock?

I have looked at the possibility of substituting with a 'Regula" movement with similar dimensions, but with the information I have can't be sure if the chain wheels are in the same position.

Has anyone run up against this before, if so what is the answer?

Regards candix

I replaced one with a Regula once. I had to drill new mounting holes and carve out some wood so that the rack could operate properly. Anymore, I just service the original movement as it"s not a big deal since it's still a hobby. You may not find an exact copy so be prepared for some modification. Just make sure to buy the right drop.

The older movements are not available. Repairing the old movement is often the best route to take. Or order a Regula and make the mods as already mentioned.

Why don't you rebuild this one

Hi R&A,
Yes, it looks like my best option is to repair this one, however it is normally much cheaper to buy a new movement than to clean, rebush the old one.
However I have already started on this with a job to clean off all the rust that have accumulated over the years -
Not ever having to reassemble one of these Hubert Herr movements it looks a little daunting to get the strike train set up - the regula is a much easier task where the hammer lifter can be adjusted after the movement is assembled.
Regards and thanks candix

Just study the movement closely until you understand what each part does and how it works. That will help you during the reassembly part. The biggest challenge is the lifting pins, as you noted. They are less forgiving than the Regula's.

View attachment 588334 Be curious to know what you did and how you made out. Have what appears to be a twin.
I’ve rebuilt about 5 of those. They’re good running movements and good to repair. Strip it down clean, polish and Bush. I have one just like that which was my first full rebuild, I rebuilt the bellows the old fashioned way, rebuilt the movment. Needed 7 bushings. The thing runs amazing. Has an amplitude if 3.6 inches.
