    Hi All

I have purchased this clock from an antique shop. The shop says it is a France clock, and no more information. So, could anyone know about this clock?

    Thanks

It looks to be French, late 19th century or a little earlier, with a rectangular rather than the more common round movement. Because there are no markings showing, then it is difficult to say more than this.

honestly, i think it is a reproduction of a 19th century clock. i would guess it was built in the 1980's or so?

    hi Brain
Thanks for your reply. Is any way to tell that is a reproduction clock? Do you know the value of it?
    Thanks

The crispness of the numbers on the back plate didn’t feel right for an antique clock. Nor did the unblemished, bright brass plates. You would think there would be scratches or tarnish after decades of existence. And the back door is something I have not seen on that style of case. Am interested in what any other French clock experts think. And just to be clear, I am not a member of that group.

Looks like a mid-20th century reproduction of a much older clock. Several reproductions were made after the second world war and are commonly found in Europe. The movements are German. At first sight they appear convincing but further examination will reveal their "odd spots" compared to an original antique.

I believe these are known as Boulle style clocks. If you do a Google search for "reproduction Boulle style clock" you will find many of these to research.

    Hi,

Yes, I agree with the above assessments - your clock is a modern, probably 1970's reproduction of a late 19th century French Boulle mantle or cartel clock. The movement is indeed German, my vote would be Urgos. I believe the cases of these clocks were often assembled in Italy. The value is merely decorative, as these clocks, despite being good quality, are not rare and therefore the horological value is somewhat limited. As roughbarked suggested, it is probably worth what you paid.

    Regards.

Well that shows that you shouldn’t rush in when you have other things on your mind. It is indeed a modern reproduction of a style developed in the 19th century, which was itself a reproduction and simplification of a style used much earlier. That said, it is a nice looking clock, even if it has little age to it.

I've recently seen Hermle reproductions with a brass case similar in shape to the poster's go for more, to 150, which is why I'm always outbid.

WOW!! I have paid way too much for it!!
I doubted about the movement at first. But I really like the style, so I took my shoot. Well!! it is a good lesson as a new clock collector.
Next time, I should post some photos here before I purchased.

And thank you very much for everybody"s help.

But at that price, they typically aren't running, so if you had to take them to a professional, the total cost would be a lot more. You'll get a feel for what is old and what's not fairly soon if you keep looking at clocks. I have three or four clocks that didn't turn out the way I expected and ended up money down the drain, so I think your experience is very common.

Thanks. This clock is my most expensive clock I ever purchased. Most other clocks are way cheaper than this one. I brought it because I really liked that style. Any way, my clock is still running, and this is only thing that I can comfort myself lol.

The prices being mentioned here are quite low estimates in my opinion. Perhaps that is more about the state of the clock market in the United States. In Europe or Australia, these reproductions do much better. Here is an example of a similar clock sold recently on Ebay UK: CLICK HERE
