    Hello,

After reading on various vintage and historical, street and tower clocks I would like to post about a historical clock located in downtown San Antonio. The clock is known as the "Hertzberg Clock" and was first installed back in 1878.

    Here are some pictures.

How often does it need to be wound?

Once a week, like any Howard street clock. It's not unusual that it continues to be hand wound- many examples, maybe most, still have their original movements. There are some good restoration project pictures and commentary here on the message board about those wonderful landmark timepieces. You might also find some pictures of this very clock.

E Howard made two sizes of this 2 dial street clock, this is the large version. I have attached a photo to show how large!

It is good to see a "proper" mechanical street clock

I tried to google, "winding a Howard street clock" and got some great photos
of this type of clock (that I have never paid much attention to, and I will do so in the future).
But, does anyone have a photo of someone winding one?

    Thanks
    Rob

No photo but here's a video of a "timekeeper" winding a historical street clock in Boston. Great article by the way.

I used to wind my local Church Clock
    St Marys Church Welwyn
    My title was Clock Winder
A simpler and more descriptive title

Yes I hear you. Because I also am the official "clock winder" at my house but I like to think there's more to it than just winding a clock.

I can understand about keeping it simple but to me there's more to it than just 'winding a clock' because I also maintain the accuracy of the clock keeping time which, in part, involves winding the clock as well so "Time Keeper" it is.

That video was exactly what I looking to see. Much more
    informative than a still photo.

    Thanks

Yes there is more to it than just winding
The clock goes haywire once a year , it just needs a little oil on it
Maintaing the accuracy is easy once it is set
It can be left for a year or two
The pendulum weight is about the size of soup plate, the adlustment is as sensitive as any watch
The clock obviously needs putting right once a week when it is wound
