I'm in need of a Herschede specialist: my nine tube two weight clock will not chime the quarters without stalling. I've tried everything under the sun and have concluded that a specialist is needed. The clock has been fully cleaned, re-bushed and oiled and runs tip top but I cannot get it to chime either tune without it stalling every time. The chime runs so slow that it stalls. Anyone have a Herschede guy they trust They don't have to be local to me as I am willing to ship it if necessary.

Does the chime fly have good end play (?) and, is the fly balanced (?). Two often overlooked problems with these clocks.

I'm in the metro Detroit area, and end play on the fly is good but there appears to be a wobble in the shaft: not sure how to address that or if it makes a difference.

It shouldn't "wobble". A pair of "V" blocks, or mounted cones, can be a big help with straightening arbors and balancing a fly. Willie X

Forgive my ignorance, but what are V blocks and cones and how would I use them?

They would be used to accurately support the arbor at the pivots. Then you can turn it (with zero play) and see exactly what's going on with that arbor.

I usually straighten them using two "V" blocks and a small hammer but there are several ways to straighten arbors.

With thick plates, a slightly bent arbor can have the same effect as a bent pivot. Also, whatever bent the arbor could have also bent a pivot.

This plate spreader can be used to check wobble. It has two adjustable V's for that purpose.
