• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

:confused:just picked up a basket case pillar and scroll clock, the movement was all apart, all the gears were in a bag seperate from the plates, the escape wheel(brass gear) was off when I saw it it looked larger than a normal gear but comparing it to my transitional case 42 tooth short drop movement it was the same size in diameter, but it does not have the standard 42 tooth wheel but a 45 tooth wheel?? Any clues is this normal? 45 tooth vs 42 how with this affect pendulum drop and regulation? any help would be great:confused:

Are you sure the movement is correct for the case? In P&S clocks with Terry type movements I don't know of any with escape wheels having more than 42 teeth. However escape wheels with higher tooth counts (including 45) do exist on 8 day movements.

There are too many unknowns here, photos of your clock and movement are required before I can say much of use. If nothing else they will help you to document the before and after of your restoration project.

Hi,

If you pull up the Bulletin index, under Whole # 149, Vol XIV, December 1970, there is an excellent article by Bruce Burns on "Terry Standard Thirty-Hour Wood Movement Contemporaries". It discusses the various types of 30 hour wood movements and includes their escape wheel teeth and leave counts. In looking at this particular source of information, there are no Terry-type movements listed with a 45 tooth escape wheel. The article indicated the only 30 hour wood clock movements with a 45 tooth escape wheel were the Groaner movement and the Jerome's & Darrow "thin" movement. The Groaner movement has 45 teeth and 7 wood leaves as does the Jerome & Darrow movement. Neither of these movements would not fit in a standard Pillar & Scroll case.

Both E. Terry & Sons and Seth Thomas did make eight day movements with 45 teeth and 8 wood leaves. The E. Terry & Sons is a large movement and is too big for the Pillar & Scroll case. The Seth Thomas movement is at least the size of a 30 hour movement but deeper because the great wheel winding drums are bigger. You can find this information in another article by Bruce Burns "Eight Day Wood Shelf Clock Movements" Whole # 144, Vol XIV, No.2, February 1970.

Posting a front & side picture of the movement might help members of the board help you ID your clock movement and the escape wheel needed. Also, knowing how many wood leaves are on the bottom on the your wood escape wheel arbor would be helpful as well?
