Hello Please help with question about Size 37 Waltham 1927 A.C.U.S Army clock this was my Step Fathers clock he was a Watchmaker. I was playing with some years ago and broke the balance. I have been working on it for a long time to fix and get it running again. ITS RUNNING NOw but here is the question . Without a setting stem mechanism from another car clock pushed in all the way and held with a rubber band. {this is with the movement out of the case} .Without the stem being held in the clock will run maybe 5 minutes or so then stop. woith the stem push and held it will run the 7 or 8 days. What can I do to fix this issue? Thank You Very Much Jim

This 37-size movement has an American-style negative-setting mechanism. This means that unless a winding stem is in place, and pushed inward, the movement remains is hand-setting mode. Normally this movement is in a case where the stem is held inward by a "sleeve". Your rubber band is accomplishing the same thing. I suspect that in your clock, when the movement has no stem in place and is in setting mode, there is enough drag from the setting parts to diminish the power and prevent the clock from running a full 8 days. The clock also probably needs to be properly cleaned and lubricated to assure enough power to keep it running.
