    Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

    If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

I bought this Elgin watch today at a local clock show. I need so clues as to what model and era thjis watch is. It is an Elgin, says Non Magnetic on the face. Inside it has Elgin watch co., 13-8, seven jewels. Also says unadjusted and Swiss. Where you adjust the speed, it has AF stacked and the other side it has RS. I know the F and S mean slow-fast, but unsure of the AS letters. I'm trying to get a model for it so I can find the bigger winding gear, as it is missing teeth. I went on the pocket watch data base page and there's nothing there I could find. Looks to be a 12S. It runs

It does remind me of this Girard-Perregaux.

I searched around last night to see if I could find the larger winding wheel ( forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology) and I sent inquiries out on that AS1076 model. So far nothing. Anyone know of a good source or have the wheel? Let me know. Can't find any parts catalogs online to look it up.

You mean the crown? (The part that you turn to wind the watch.) If so, this is not a part associated with the AS movement, but rather with the case. A watch repairer that understands vintage/antique pocket watches should be able to help you.

I believe he means the ratchet wheel. It seems to be missing a couple of teeth.

Yes. #415 is the part number.
Though I'd be a little wary as AS 1052 is a 16''' and AS 1076 is a 17.5''' maybe the ratchet wheel is still the same size.

family:
H= 4.15mm:
1052, 1054, 1067, 1068, 1087, 1148, 1369, 1379: 16'''
1063, 1064, 1071, 1072, 1080, 1121: 17'''
1075, 1076: 17.5''', negative stem mechanism
H= 3.5mm:
1058, 1059, 1069, 1070: 16'''
1065, 1066, 1073, 1074: 17'''

That's what I'm doing. I wish I could find cataloging on this watch to verify part numbers. I'm an old Ford parts man and everything was by the catalog. I can find alot of old Ford parts thru various sources, but watch parts are another story! Seems like there's not alot of cataloging online for watches. I love the hunt.

The Bestfits books appear to solve many of these problems. Measuring the diameter of the wheel, counting the teeth and carefully measuring the square and the thickness at the square, will all help in locating a replacement.

I got my 2 Swartchild Swiss catalogs today. They've seen alot of use. I've been looking thru both and have found references to the AS 1076 movement, but not alot of info on it. It shows parts, but real basic stuff. I look up the calibre number 1076, say go to page 148, go there and it has a pic of a 17L sized circle. No mention of A Schild or numbers. There are parts that are interchangeable with this watch. Looks like some internals. Nowhere have I any of the geartrain parts. Really strange catalog. The other, smaller one show a little more such as the hour, minute, second gears, hands, etc... I guess I was expecting to be able to find my movement, and have a complete list of all parts. Maybe someone can give a little more insight on how you use these books.
I did order a 415 ratchet gear as suggested.
