I have the above mentioned clock and would love to know what age it is. It only has 'Foreign' written on the dial and Kienzle Foreign on the back plate. I ve a feeling its a 1950's clock but could be 20's or 30's as easily. I d love to get to the bottom of this whole 'Foreign' thing with clocks on this side of the pond as they crop up occasionally but dont normally have a makers mark on them.

    All help greatly appreciated.

    Eamonn

"Foreign" on the dial and movement indicates that the clock was manufactured outside the U.K. for export to the U.K. on or after 1926.

Most of the clocks marked Foreign were German and German clockmakers, such as Kienzle, provided unmarked movements to the trade along with marked movements.

    Regards.

This is a 1930's variation of Kienzle's Movement N, used on large floor standing clocks. The dial would suggest it was made for British trade - who desired these 'reproduction' clocks during the 1930's - and may even be a British made case. Kienzle is not known to have reproduced these movements after the second world war.

The same movement turns up more often in Art Deco influenced cases with round dials and chrome farings. A video example:

Thanks a million for the information guys, I had an idea that this may have been the situation with this but was not sure at all. Great to have a date for it. Did marking clocks with 'Foreign' continue into the 50's or 60's? As i say clocks with it seem to turn up randomly turn up here so I d be very curious to know?
    Thanks again

I had a Bentima mantel clock using a Hermle movement, dated 1964 and the dial still had 'Foreign' imprinted near the 6 o'clock position. I don't think it was a postwar requirement but it does turn up sometimes.
