Ct. silversmith/goldsmith Harvey Sadd also made clocks in late 18th, early 19th centuries. Has anyone run across any examples?

Welcome to the message board, Peter. Although many online references say Sadd worked with Burnap, they seem to focus on the fact that he was an engraver and silversmith. Will be interesting to hear thoughts on whether he made clocks, or only the dials. Signed dials might be a great find, too.

    Good luck in your search.

In an Oct. 1798 issue of the Hartford Courant, Sadd announced that he was setting up a "clockmaking business of different kinds as may suit the patron, also watch repair..... and gold and silver business..". As a rank novice, I am unsure of how to interpret his wording.

A Sadd commentary of the times, as it were. Often enough, the terms "clockmaker" and "clockmaking" were used by individuals who were in any way involved in the production and selling of clocks, whether by making whole clocks, making movements, making cases, assembling cases and movements obtained from different sources. It is an interesting comment, however, to say "as may suit the patron." I'm at a loss to interpret what is meant by that phrase.

I would interpret this as roughly as "making or obtaining any kind of clock as the customer wishes".
