    To all,

I have received notice that our good friend and Message Board Forums Administrator Harold Bain passed away yesterday morning, April 20. His wife Judie advised me that he passed due to previously undiagnosed pancreatic cancer, that was found when taken to hospital three days earlier. Harold's last post to the Admin-Moderator team just three weeks ago had mentioned he was having some pain and would be taking a short leave, but this was completely unexpected for all of us.

Harold was one of the longest serving members of our Admin-Moderator team, He will very much be missed for his expertise and advice in clock repair as well as his contributions to the operation and management of this venue.

A 'drop in' celebration of life event for Harold will be held next Sunday, April 29th from 2 to 5 pm at the Mount Lawn Funeral Home, 21 Garrard Rd., Whitby, ON. Judie has invited all members of Chapter 33 and any other NAWCC members and friends who might be able, to please come out for that. She relates that Harold got a lot of enjoyment being part of our Association for many years.

Other information will be posted here as it becomes available.

Added 4/27: I've just received the link for Harold's obituary, you can post messages for his family on the site: Harold Bain Obituary

Must be a shock to all to knew him. It was clear to me he had a great deal of experience and he was very active on here. Will miss seeing his name in the lists of viewers of threads and his contributions.

Harold's expertise far exceeded Horology. He had much to contribute to the message board. He was a kind, courteous and effective moderator. He was someone I sought advice and guidance from and who's moderation was fair, even-handed. I was aware of his failing health and the toll it was taking on him. I had noticed his recent absence and hoped he was recovering. I am greatly saddened to learn of his passing. The Message Board will not be the same without him. RIP Harold. My deepest condolences to his family.

John, I heard of this sad news this morning.

When I first happened upon this message board I saw Harold's name and since he lived near Toronto reached out to him to see if he would sponsor me to visit the Chapter 33 in Toronto. He readily agreed and we met a few times at the Toronto chapter. He was very knowledgeable, especially regarding the IBM electric time clocks.

I wish I was closer to join in his celebration of life. However if at all possible please pass on to Julie how much I enjoyed knowing Harold and his welcoming me into the chapter, and above all my condolences to Julie and his family.

    Very sincerely,

    David

I'm saddened to hear this. Harold was a bit short with me a couple of times when I first joined, mostly after I asked some stupid questions. Once he realized that I was sticking with it, he became encouraging to me and gave me some great advice.

One thing about him stuck out to me; when someone asked for help with some clock operation problem, he would offer up an opinion immediately and in the end it turned out he was almost always correct.

I'll miss him on the boards.

    Shocking ... absolutely shocking!

Harold was one of the last of the core group of clock folks who helped me so much when I joined by sharing their expertise and wisdom.

Rest in peace, Harold, you will truly be missed.

Harold helped me greatly when I first joined this message board. I was always impressed with his ability to explain repair processes so clearly that even a hands on learner like me could follow his written word with ease. Then later when I was invited to become a moderator, Harold again took the time to help me get up to speed with the tasks involved. We have lost a friend and mentor with his passing. My deepest condolences to all his friends and family. Rest in peace Harold.

I also am saddened by the news of Harold’s passing.

In today’s fast paced world we often take for granted those around us who help us but are quiet about it. I will miss his presence here on the message board. His absence will be a great loss to us all.

I send my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Rest in peace Harold, you will be misses and remembered.

I was also mentored by Harold after he invited me to join the moderator team. I had noticed over the past year or so that he had become a bit abrupt in his comments, and I think it was because of pain he's been experiencing lately. Harold knew time clocks, and was the "go to" man for advice on how to repair them. Yes, he's going to be greatly missed on the MB! My condolences also to the family!
    We'll miss you, bud!
I believe this is the last pic Harold posted of himself. About 4 years ago.

Very sad news indeed. Harold was always among the first to offer help and I liked his direct and practical way very much. my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family. I know how hard this must be for them. I lost my wife last year to pancreatic cancer, a brutal killer.

I was really saddened to read of Harold's death in the local paper today (April 27th.). He lived only a few miles away from me, and I visited him a few times to learn some "tricks of the trade". I remember the first time I walked into his house my immediate reaction was to suddenly stop and gaze in open-mouthed amazement at the number and types of clocks that he had in every room and on every surface! He was a very pleasant fellow and a patient teacher. I'd like to think that at least one of his grandfather clocks stopped the minute he died...As the song goes.

I joined the message board before I joined the NAWCC and Ch33. Reading through the posts it became quite evident that Harold was a major contributor and was very knowledgeable in clock repairs. Through his hard work I do not think the message board will be where it is today.

After joining the NAWCC and going to the Ch33 meetings I did get a chance to meet Harold and talk with him. He wlll be sadly missed.

And I know that many in the future will continue to learn from his wisdom and experience written down on this board. RIP Mr. Bain

I was saddened recently to find out about Harold.

Earlier on in this hobby, I was posting odd queries & learning a lot. When I would go to the thread to see who replied to my questions, the avatars would always stand out first - Harold’s Husky dog would catch my eye & he would be there - again & again, I would see that dog followed by helpful advice.

I would say to myself - “Good, Harold has commented - I will make progress”

Hard to believe I won’t be seeing that dog in the future…..

His “If it won’t tick…” slogan always made me smile, no matter how many times I read it.

Where you are now, Mr. Bain, the clocks are all in beat so you can just enjoy them.

    Thanks for all your replies.....:emoji_wave:
