My 990 Luckenbach arrived today and I noticed something I am not sure has been mentioned here before. I did a search on here to check.

When compared to th 974 Luckenbach I expected a difference in the style of markings. But what I did not expect was the variation in color. I remember from my digging in the Halligan papers on special finishes a ref to gold gilt and red gilt lettering. I poured through the 16s and found no mention. But when I went to the 18s there it was listed that there was red gilt lettering as an option. Can someone with a 990 Luckenbach confirm the color of the lettering on their movement?

I just don't see the red? This is Serial #703825 finished 1-14-1908.

It may be the lighting angle of reflection?

Do you have this pattern? This is called the Burr Freer Pattern.

Serial # 740696 made on 10-12-1909 around the same period.

That is a red. Put it next to the Freer and you should see the difference. I have noticed other 990 that may have the red as well.

Agreed. It appears that the 974 Luckenbach watches were gold lettering. By the few examples of the 990 Luckenbach so far it appears they chose the red gilt lettering. I will need to see a few of the non special finish 990 to see if maybe they did the 990 in red gilt usually or just for special finishes.

    Great watches Jim!

I had my eye on an Allen about a year and a half ago. Wish I had been better funded at the time or it would be in the collection. There was a 2 tone, mostly gold, marked Supra but the dial was shot, no hands, no case, and needing a service. But that one was sitting for as much as a complete and well running Luckenbach.

I do love the special DMK Hamilton. A nice change to seeing the same ones over and over.
