I would agree, would not expect to see N.D. I checked my list and did not find any that I had previously documented from North Dakota, using any form of abbreviation or full spelling.

    Dave,
I am glad to see that you got them ! I told some other Hamilton collectors that the prices were too crazy for me to stay in, but realty prices don't mean much years down the road.

I don' t believe anyone can dispute that you have a world class Illinois Private Label collection that can not be rivaled.:);):D

Recently, I collected a Hamilton Grade 972 open face pendant set watch, serial number 74588, marked for Calvin P Engle, Hazleton PA, on the dial and on the case. Note that the spelling on the dial is Hazelton, not Hazleton (which is correct).

Calvin Pardee Engle was the son of Stephen D Engle, who died in 1921 at the age of 86 and who was the builder of the Engle Clock, now at the NAWCC museum in Columbia PA. The clock was originally known as the Apostolic Clock.

This signature on the Barrel Bridge is the most unusual that I can remember seeing.

It is just a plain Jane 924, serial number 120130, made on 4-20-1900 and jobbed out from Stein & Ellbogen & Co. Chicago, one of Hamilton's largest Agents,so I would guess it went to that area of the country.

A Jewelers Circular search ,listed many Weber's as jewelers, Lancaster, Pa, N. Y. Dayton. OH, Boston, Ma, etc.

I bought this PL near its home town of Wapakoneta, OH in a little jewelry store. I have never seen one of these and I have seen a ton of Ohio private labels. This is a 16j Hamilton 930 sold by the factory to a jeweler called H. Hartman in Wapakoneta, OH. The name Auglaize is the name of the river which runs through Wapakoneta and is also the name of the county of which Wapakoneta is the seat. At least in this section of the Hamilton records, this is the only 930 sold to this jeweler...not that it matters much...but I like it. It will go into the bank box with all of my other worthless PLs.

I am putting some faith in the Jones-Horan description, which I assume was probably written by Fred. (Or, at least consulted on by Fred.) It is the first one that I have seen like this, as well, but then my interest in Hamiltons is rather recent.

"The Rovelstad Brothers of Elgin, Illinois were prominent retail jewelers and contracted a number of private label watches from Hamilton and Elgin, many of which were marked as the present example with the Johan Sverdrup name on movement as a form of grade designation but with the Rovelstad name on dial. The origin of the Johan Sverdrup name was from a prominent politician in Norway that served as Prime Minister of that country from 1884 to 1889."

I just picked up this private label Hamilton 927 at an auction, SN 169405, running great! It's private-labelled for a jeweler in Mexico, Missouri.
The movement says, " Best. Made Expressly for Worrell. Mexico, Mo." The Keystone " <Boss> Extra" hunter case is pretty worn with significant brassing, but that's not a big deal to me. I like the damaskeening on these movements!

Fresh from the last J & H Auction is a hard to find P/L marked "Main Line. Private Label for W.M. Stone, Minneapolis, MN. The Ledgers show this was sold to him on 7-10-1899.

I had only seen one other of these marked watches years ago, Bob Bennett had one at a show in Fl and they were listed in the Price Guides from the 1990-2010, but never did find one until now.

This is Fred's description from the sale.

Hamilton, "Main Line, W.M. Stone, Minneapolis, Minn" private label marked movement, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, nickel OF display recase with Hamilton marked bezels, "W.M. Stone, Minneapolis, Minn" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, combination checkerboard and circular pattern nickel damascene, s#92309. A rare and attractive railroad watch; William M. Stone was an official watch inspector for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Minneapolis Railroad and on April 27th, 1897 Stone registered U.S. trademark number 29900 for the phrase "Main Line" claiming his business had made continuous use of this phrase since 1895. In addition to its railroad associated "Main Line" marking, other interesting features of the present watch include its unusual damascene which was likely a pattern Hamilton made exclusively for Stone as well as its single-sunk dial with distinctive Arabic numerals which is essentially the same style as was used by Webb C. Ball and a handful of other watch inspectors of the 1890s.

Hamilton 92309 is an interesting watch.

I have a photographic record of Hamilton 92301, which is marked (dial and movement) for J C Herkner Co, Grand Rapids, MI.

According to the Hamilton factory records, both 92301 and 92309 were sold directly to their respective jewellers, as marked. The records indicate that, around that time (1899), watches were being sold to quite a wide range of individual jewellers. Some well-known names are included in the record.

In the immediate timeframe, the indications are that Stone would have received 92303, 92305, 92309, 92313 and 92343, whilst Herkner would have received 92301, 92318, 92320 and 92328.

18-size 17-jewel Model 2 Hamilton 927 stem wind/lever set hunting pocket watch with its dial signed by Hamilton and the movement signed "The Victor Jewelry Co." I don't know whether the dial is original to the movement, but it would sure be nice if the dial bore a matching Victor signature.

The movement was made about 1901 & it's protected by & exhibited through a glass crystal when the back cover is swung open.

The case is marked "Warranted" & appears to be red gold-filled. I think it's a Dueber knock-off ~ the gladiator figure doesn't seem quite right when I compare it to the actual trade mark application.

    "Main Line"

I bought a mate to my 936 in post 321. It is a early 937 Serial # 89630 for the RR Inspector W. M. Stone, Minneapolis, Mn.

It was sold to him on 2-27-1900. I found 4 watches sold to him on that day on the Ledger page.

This was in a Hamilton Salesman's case, so I found a nice case for it, . It is Sterling with multicolored Gold in Green, Orange, Gold.

This is from Fred Hansen's description from the J & H sale about Mr. Stone

A jeweler Circular article from 1897 said he moved from 8 S. 3rd St. to much larger on 16 S. 3rd St.

Hamilton, "Main Line, W.M. Stone, Minneapolis, Minn" private label marked movement, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, nickel OF display recase with Hamilton marked bezels, "W.M. Nice photos of a wonderful 1897 Hamilton Grade 934 watch, Rhett. The inscription "Black Diamond Special" refers to the Lehigh Valley RR train named "The Black Diamond" or "Black Diamond Express" that ran between New York and Buffalo via Allentown, commencing in 1896. The watch is not railroad grade (although that is not to say that it might not have been accepted into railroad service). Clearly, Mr Keller of Allentown was cashing in on the fame of the train, one of the best that ever ran.

    #218 Roosevelt #613608

    #302 Lincoln #646880

These were all sold thru A. Hirsch &Co. Chicago. The Washington have SS dials and the other have DS dials?

This very early Serial No. 29920 Grade 935 "Main Line Special" This will go with the threads 321 & 331 Private Labels for Wm.M. Stone, Minneapolis, Mn. Who Pat'd the "Main Line" He dropped the "special" from the Pat'd.

So this watch is "Special" in that, it has the Special on the BB and the later ones didn't. The Ledger page shows the watch before this was sold to him, so there is another "Special" out there

It was in an OF case when I took the first pictures and I found a nice hunter for it in the last pics.

"The B & B Special", Bangor, Maine Serial # 318107 is a 974. It was sold to A. Paul & Co. Boston, Mass. on 7-30-1904.

He bought 3 out of the 1st 10 on the Ledger page and all of the 1st 10 have a "S" after the finished date, which was Hamilton's custom of doing a Special finish for the first 10 watches on the page. In this case indicating the dial & movement were specially marked.

I couldn't find a reference to the B & B or a Railroad, so I assume it was just a Jewelers thing to sell his watches.

I found these Railroads for the area,
    B&A, Bangor & Aroostook
    B&M, Boston& Maine
    MC, Maine Central

A couple private labels marked “The Hamilton”, ordered by LeBron & Son’s, Galena, IL.

Sorry about the missing hand and regulator spring. I have a replacements, but have been negligent in putting them on. Heck, it’s only been about 10 years
