One of my favorite Hamilton Private Labels. Sorry about the mismatched case screw. I’ll have to get that fixed.

Private lable for the jeweler in Potsdam, N.Y. J.F. Butler

    DSCN6806.JPG DSCN6808.JPG DSCN6809.JPG DSCN6810.JPG DSCN6811.JPG DSCN6807.JPG

I saw an ad for Christmas from 1913 and saw a ad in the Jewelers Circular(1899) he took out for a employee of his" a expert watchmaker and engraver" who wanted to move to North or South Dakota and would work for I month free for board & room.

This is a 924 so it was easy for a jeweler to order cheaper watches and have Railroad Watch engraved on them. Came with damaged SS regular Hamilton dial.

Back on post 90 There is a P/L that has him listed with his name & town on a SS dial but the movement was not marked?

Hello everyone. Very funny Dave shows a Henry Dehnel Pocket watch because I have one & I also found the same link on him being an American Civil War veteran. My watch is an Hamilton 938,18s, Henry Dehnel Special,17j, sn 13615. I couldn't believe how beautiful the movement is on it right down to the polished regulator scale. It has the minor marks on it when I put my loupe on but when looking at it normally, it is such a gorgeous piece. Not just anyone polished the regulator & related parts, rather a jeweler of course. I'll go ahead & add the link to him again so some don't have to scroll up & down:

Sandusky History: Henry Dehnel, Sandusky Jeweler and Civil War Veteran

I have noticed some Hamilton "Special" PL watches & I wonder if they were one of Hamilton's offerings of private label watches?
It says Henry Dehnel was a member of some lodges including the Knights of Pythias & I just happen to have a Santa Fe Special pocket watch with a Knights of Pythias case. It is not related to the Hamilton watch but I included it since he was a member of that lodge.

Stephen, nice 938. I am very sure Henry did not polish the steel parts. Some nameless nice person at the Hamilton factory did that. A feature of the higher grades was highly polished steel work and chamfered flat head screws. If you compare a 938, to say a 940, you will see the difference in finish. Sometime in it's life it had the upper balance cap jewel setting replaced, it should be gold like the other settings. No way to tell for certain, but on this watch I would expect a matching dial. Hamilton was very generous with their special marking on both factory and P/L movements.

This is a nice Hamilton "931" Grade of which they produced 4000.

Serial number 35447. The Ledgers shows this and #46 Sold to, O.D. Leidal, Fergus Falls, Minn on 5-2-1899.

The 930& 931 had a nice DMK pattern and blue plate & jewel screws. These were 16J watches.
In a nice Keystone case with a "C" marked below the serial number?

Thank you onsite. Until now, the "G.T.B & Co." on my own watch was a mystery.
Here it is - Hamilton 926, SN 547202 with the special gilt lettering and plate screws.
I did write to the Beltrami County Historical Society in Bemidji but got no reply. I'll try again.

This is an early number 935. Serial # 3607

I bought it for the case.

I believe it would have had a DS dial that matched the movement.

The Ledgers show it was sold to him on 2-27-1895.

H.J. Smith, Racine, Wis.. A beautiful clean & bright movement, but the case is the killer.

I only collect Hamilton Private Labels with my name on them. However, I have managed to gather several different examples. If you look at the Hamilton database on the main site you will see a field for seller's name as well as the jobber's name. Neither one are filled in except where I filled in some of the McIntyre/Eisenstadt data.

It is interesting that Charles DeLong had his shop two doors down the street from Fred's shop. Since these watches were all sold to railroaders, DeLong would have rated each of them before it was sold.

Here are the rest of the current ones. I am still missing a 941 and possibly more hunters but I think 15 examples are enough, so if I find the hunters I will probably let go some of the duplicates (but not sequentials).

If it shows up, I will try to buy it. Those three went to Eisenstadt as a set and were almost certainly all for Fred.

There did not seem to be much enthusiasm when I tried to get folks to enter the jobber information into the on-line database. Perhaps we could use this private label collection to at least get those added.

In fairness, you can read the jobber information from the ledger entries. However, i wanted to make it so you could also search for runs by jobber name (or retailer).

    later --------------------------
If anyone is interested in what I think we should have in the Hamilton database here is the page with my oldest Fred McIntyre watch. If you search for 46503 it will return the full page.

So how can this be added to the DB? Can anyone do it? How would you install a search by Jobber Name?

In your chart some numbers are not in order.

At present the runs do show up on the DB pages, and as you say, the Jobber info is on the page but if someone was looking for PL by a jobber it would be nice.

I bought this movement from eBay and have waited for 2 months to find a Waltham Mod. 88 OF case for it and did find one.

I had to buy the complete watch, but the stem even worked with the Hamilton movement.

A great Fancy dial and I don't see anything wrong with it. The Ledgers show it was sold to him on 11-12-1898.

    Grade 976

Emil Spies, Philadelphia, Pa. can't find much on him, maybe someone better at that can help.

So what was just a movement is back in a nice case and a saved complete watch for someone down the road.

Jim it was originally written two generations of the main site ago. At that time it had the ability to search on anything, one thing at a time. i.e. grade, jobber, etc. That was lost when a consultant was hired to redo it after one of the updates.

I can give it the same capabilities as the Waltham database at https://nawcc-info.org and was thinking that it should incorporate the finishing department records like both the ledgers and the gray book pages are included in the Waltham material.

Maybe if we get some development under way along the lines Tom Wilcox has been describing in his Weekly News the resources could be made available to do it properly.

Take a look at the search page at NAWCC-Info and let me know what you think would work. On that form, you fill in any field or fields and all the items you enter must be found to generate items in the resulting list. There is a second search for for just serial numbers to avoid intimidating first time users.

To update the database, anyone could generate a list of jobbers by serial number and I can incorporate that into the result.

The current display of runs does not display the runs with extra data properly. Those runs should be interspersed in the runs from Lasser's lList that are displayed at the top. They differ because they do not have an ending serial number. When you are scanning the list when you see only one serial number that represents an observation that has been verified.

Here's a couple 940's to add. One is sn 52855, Eagle Jewelry Co, Winnemacca, Nev. It runs but needs a regulator spring because this one is broken. It could use a better crystal.
The next one, sn 524262, J. Wittlig & Sons, Marietta, Ohio. This one is in a flip out case & has the name Frank Henke inscribed in the case. I need to dig through my crown stash to replace the worn one on this watch. I got a lot of crowns that have already paid for themselves. I should have one to replace this one. The other one could use replacing as well but at least it isn't as bad.

Good day everyone. My apologies for not showing or mentioning the above 940 movements whether they were marked with a private vendor or not. They weren't & upon looking again so I could takes pics, I noticed the other one has a broken regulator spring also. I don't think it was broken when I got it but I could be wrong. I wonder if that was common but I guess if it were, they would have redesigned future 18s movements. I do have a parts watch with a spring. I have anothe working movement but I don't like robbing parts off a working movement. Anyway, here are pics of both movements respectively.

Broken whip springs (any brand) are not that uncommon. You've got to realize that this piece of metal has been under stress continuously for over 100 years. Given that, it's actually amazing to me that so many survive!

About two years ago, Jim Haney posted a 924 private label from L.D. Merrill, jewelers in Sparta Wisconsin.
Here is another from L.D. Merrill. SN 250214, 926 with optional gilt lettering and double sunk dial. "SWC" (Sparta Wisconsin City) on the dial.

I wrote to the Monroe County Historical Society in Sparta. They responded with a 1913 article from the Sparta Democrat. Frank Tolock (1856-1913) was killed "..while engaged in the patriotic act of assisting with the harvesting. While driving the binder across the field it was run into a small hole, throwing Mr. Tolock from the seat to the ground. He raised himself from the ground and uttered a few words complaining of a pain in his head, and in a short time was dead of a cerebral hemorrhage." He was buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sparta.

Thank you Jim for the information you posted about L.D. Merrill.

Is that North Dakota Dave? Does 1905 predate the use of two letter abbreviations for our State names? I'm old, but not that old.

Not sure I understand, Tref. The abbreviation is "No. Dak." for North Dakota.

Well, today we would abbreviate North Dakota as N.D. Just wanted to make sure that in 1905 No. Dak. was the same thing. I figured it was, but wanted to be sure. Thanks Dave

Ah, OK. Yes, I have seen both "No. Dak." and "N. Dak." used back then. I also would not be too surprised to see "N. D." used if space was limited. I would not expect to see, and have never seen, our modern convention of "ND" used.
