When Bob Wingate offered this watch in 1996 on a mail-order list, it had a DS AN dial signed "Hamilton Watch Co."

    Thanks again Fred!

Would that be considered to be gold-flashed?

It kind of surprises me that there weren't more very nice glass-backed cases that would allow for the insides of some of these great timepieces to be more easily seen and admired.

This Grade 972 has "Official Standard" on the plate.

It was ordered and sold through Smith, Patterson, Boston, Mass.

It has the 972 DMK pattern and is the better (newer) model that is Adjusted to 5 Pos. and has a DR.

Hamilton 993 Movement Serial Number 393804. Movement is standard 993 but "J.L. Williams Zumbrota, Minn" is imprinted on the dial. J.L. Williams appears to have been a Zumbrota jeweler during the 1880s through 1900s.

This was a pieced together parts project watch.

Hamilton 18s Grade 925 P/L for William M. Shlaes, Hancock, MI. I found his listing in the City Directory for Calumet, MI in 1910-12.

He was listed under Jeweler& Watchmaker,Optician:glasses:,Piano/Organs,Talking Machines, Souvenirs/Curios.

"The Captain" must have been a nickname. There were 25+Steamship companies in the city directory.

I have also seen a 927 with his marking

I liked the cool dial on this one.

    L.D. Merrill. Sparta, Wis. Serial # 430119 a 924 Grade.

    DSCN4600.JPG DSCN4601.JPG DSCN4598.JPG DSCN4599.JPG

    I found this on google,

The L.D. Merrill Jewelry Store established itself at this address as early as 1875, but operated in an earlier building than the one that stands there today. That building was either destroyed or razed in 1897. In 1897, L.D. Merrill had the present-day structure built which he continued to use as his jewelry store until circa 1911. In 1911, the Citizen's State Bank was located here which circa 1920-1925 turned into the Farmer's National Bank. From 1916 to at least 1931, this building was used as a bank. The Farmer's National Bank was probably here until 1969, when the Farmers National Bank merged with Monroe County Cank to become the Union Natonal Bank and Trust Co.

The L.D. Merrill Jewelry Store building gains local historical significance under Criterion A as an example of the general mercantile businesses common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As indicated within the Commercial Theme, these enterprises (hardware stores, jewelry stores, etc,.) played a central role in the growth and stability of the community's business. The period of historical significance for this building extends from 1897 to perhaps as late as 1916. In addition, the building gains local historical significance under criterion A in association with Sparta's banking topic under Sparta's Commercial Theme. The period of historical significance for this building extends from 1916 to after World War II.

This two-story, three-bay brick commercial building features a metal front with a small band of half-windows on the second story of the facade. A contemporary metal and glass storefront with an off-set entrance with a transom window and a sidelight on the south bay and an entrance door to the upper story on the north bay is located on the lower story of the facade.

This small commercial building, originally exhibiting a vernacular brick form characterized by a corbeled brick cornice with a small pediment and white stone lintels, has been altered completely by the addition of the metal front. In addition, it has been altered by the replacement of its historic storefront with contemporary storefront.

Constructed in 1897, this small commercial block, 70 ft. x 26 ft., was built for L.D. Merrill. It was built at the same time as the adjacent Millegan building at 116 South Water (MP35/3). Merrill also acted as his own construction contractor. Originally used to house Merrill's jewelry store, this brick block replaced a frame building previously on the site, which had served as Merrill's jewelry store since around 1880. Merrill rented office space on the second floor of his new brick block to Drs. Millegan and Williams.

    A 18s and a 16s THOR.

I would like to know the orgin of the name. They were sold to a agent Louis Manheimer who had his business at 31 Maiden Lane in NY and also had a office in Chicago, according to the Jewelers Circular.

These are considered a Private Lable and similar to "Union" & Union Specials.

    Hi John,
Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.

I would venture to say that the only way to find out would be to keep a record of examples.

The Hamilton Factory records are very weak on watches produced before 1900.

This is Halligan's notes on the 930 and he states that Hamilton did not keep records (other than individual sales)on watches before 1900.

Taking a quick look at the movement galleries available on the PWDB (https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/guide/company/hamilton/images/4?filterSize=18&filterJewels=all&filterMovementSetting=all&filterModels=all), the highest Hamilton 18s serial I can find with blue screws is 209,161. Though, I am hesitant to consider those as original since the vast majority of examples appear before 50,000.

That might provide a general idea for you. Of course, other examples may provide better accuracy.

    Hi John,

From Halligans notes I get the impression that for the 18s movements - especially toward the end of that era, say thru about 1920 - a buyer could order blue screws, and different trim colors including for example, red lettering, etc., whenever they wished.

Gilt Trim was certainly an ordering option and is many times indicated in the ledgers.

When looking at serial numbers and associated design changes at Hamilton, one must keep in mind that (especially in the early years) Hamilton did not effectively employ a First In First Out (FIFO) inventory strategy. In many cases (especially in the earlier years), movements appear to have been taken from inventory for final finishing and shipment is a somewhat random order. This resulted in some movements sitting in finishing inventory for month's or even years. When a movement was finished for shipment, it was usually finished to the latest design and marking standards. Without going back to the ledgers and noting when a watch was actually finished and shipped, this practice can make it appear that certain changes occurred much earlier than they actually were.

In regards to private labels, Hamilton (for many years) designated the first few movements of each run for private labels or special finishes (note: not all private labels and special finishes came from these designated serial numbers). From my experiences with the ledgers, many of these movements would sit in inventory longer than the average and in the end may or may not have private label markings. Just another complication when trying to evaluate these watches.

Thanks for the thoughts, facts and opinions... appreciated.. I just have not seen that many blued screw sets on 18 size movements ...and I feel they add significantly to the movement appearance..
Still looking for a tu-toned movement with blue screws..

Colorado private label. Don't have a picture handy of the dial, but it is marked same as the movement.

John, luv the watch Telluride PL. I used to live in Colorado and spent some of my early life there. That is just splendid.

I have this 975 to add to the line up. William Kerr & Son, Boston. Picked this up since my last name is Kerr and I work in Boston. I was also born near Lancaster PA so it was meant to be. Have the missing parts on the way and found a nice gold filled hunter case. Just need to fix the broken balance staff and give it a really really deep cleaning. Its filthy.

    Dave,
Thanks for posting this PL. The Ledgers show it was sold to him on 8-22-1902.

We always wonder when there is no matching name on the watch.

    Hi Jim,

Wasn't it the case that over time dial only signatures were cheaper than dial+movement signatures? And then minimum orders effected the cost of both dial only, and dial+movement, signature orders?

And practices seem to have varied over all makers, over time, to the point where, basically, if we can imagine it now it was done then, to compete and sell!

    Dave,
In Hamilton's case, they did the dial free and charged $1 for the Barrel Bridge engraving.
