    Hi
I finally took the plunge, through necessity, and have been wrestling with the challenge of colleting a hairspring for a small early 1900's ladies fob watch. The practice sessions have consumed the small stock of collet pins that had been gifted to me and I am now looking to find a replenishment supply.
I purchased some collets pins suitable for wrist watches from Cousins but they are too small in diameter for the larger pocket watch collets.
I have done the usual search of the supply houses and other on line sources but I am not seeing anything suitable.
Could anyone suggest a source? And yes I am trying to avoid having to turn pins on my lathe.

    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Rob,

Yes, Cousins don't sell the larger size pins suitable for pocket watches any more, and neither do any of the other materials houses as far as I've been able to determine. These are the number 209 size Swiss ones, and when my small stock is exhausted I shall have to turn them in the lathe, or more probably just file them up in the old-fashioned way.

    Regards,

    Graham

    I am a bit confused......

I have a small box full of pins of various sizes. I always find one that fits either wristwatches or pocketwatches.

I do however lack pins that holds old verge movement plates.

What approximate diameter are you looking for?

    Hi Skutt,

These are Cousins P1189 or P1190.

    Thanks Graham.

I did not know they were available and have been filing my own when needed.

I will have to order some......

Would you know the dimmensions of the pins Rob are looking for?

    Hi Skutt,

In the '209' assortment I mentioned earlier, they're all about 5mm long and range from 0.5mm (thick end) and 0.3mm (thin end), down to 0.2mm (thick end) and 0.1mm (thin end).

The P1189 taper from 0.58mm to 0.3mm by 11mm long, (all the same size, not an assortment), and the P1190 are 0.8mm to 0.5mm, again 11mm long. There is a P1191, 0.98mm to 0.6mm, but I find I very rarely need that one.

    Regards,

    Graham

    Thanks Graham.

I will go through my stock next week when I am back in my workshop. (Hopefully I have plenty of the "hard to find" version....LOL)

Thanks for the responses. The pins I have fit the 209 description being 4.8mm long and ranging from 0.3mm thick end and 0.15mm thin end, up to 0.38mm thick end and 0.2mm thin end. The hole in the collets I am working with is 0.24mm and so the 0.3mm/0.15mm is ideal.

From all of the above it looks like I'll have to turn some up on the lathe.

    Thanks
    Rob
