A tad embarrassing this question - but if you don't air your ignorance, you never find out - so here goes.

I picked this up at a fair yesterday, and I can't see an obvious way to remove it from it's case. It looks to me like its a front loader, but can't see any obvious release mechanism - the dust cover has the usual blued metal slide, and I'd usually expect this just to slip off so I can access the movement. The thing is - the dust cover won't come off and I don't want to force it - any suggestions ??

    Hi Britannicus,

Will the steel slide move to the release position?

I think this is a Swiss movement, one of the later offerings from Samuels.

    Regards,

    Graham

it moves to the release position, but then won't come off - movement is working, so I'm assuming everything is intact inside

I finally managed to get the cover off - at some time the case has had a tough life and had jammed the dust cover - I was being just a bit too respectful and gentle, and she finally came out

    Hi Britannicus,

That's good, may we see the movement please? These Swiss movements don't usually have caps, but perhaps this was a specification by Samuels.

    Regards,

    Graham

Happy to oblige with a few pics of the movement - it's in real need of a clean all over, but ran for 30 hours on a wind so not bad. Something I've not seen before is a date on the movement Oktb 1895 which is rather nice to be able to so precisely date it . Clearly Swiss for H Samuel, the case is rather battered "three bears" Swiss Silver hallmark 0.935 silver - it came with a sterling silver 1926 Sherwood Foresters Regimental fob and a graduated watch chain. Priority is a good clean and to replace the awful yellowed acrylic crystal. Not checked to see how accurately it's running yet
