Gut Cord on clocks/watches

Hello,

I recently bought a late 17th century clock that had been converted from weight-driven to fusee / spring-driven. It uses a gut cord instead of a chain. I'm curious as to when this conversion was done.

However, in a broader sense, I would be interested to know if it is possible approximate a clock or watch's production date simply on the use of gut cord instead of chain?

Does anyone have any information on the time period gut was used and when it was phased out?

Thank you,
Chris
