• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Hi! Seeking information on a Ridgeway grandfather clock I have inherited from my mother's estate. I believe it was purchased in the early 1980's. Unfortunately, I do not have any manual or other paperwork for it. It is stamped with the Gravely Furniture Company seal on the back. States Ridgeway on the clock dial. Inside it is stamped with the # 8122759. i have read that if that is the serial number that the first 2 numbers indicate the year of make. I have not been able to find any information on this clock. It runs beautifully. Would like to know more about this clock.

Pictures attached.

Thank you.

Hello, Lawrence, and welcome to the board.

If you provide a picture of the back of the movement, we may be able to identify the maker of the movement. As you may be aware, Ridgeway was a furniture company, not a clock maker. Ridgeway would purchase movements from various manufacturers and placed the movements in their cases.

Much of the information regarding the clock you have already identified. Are there more specific questions you need answered?

Regards.

Ridgeway clocks were originally built by the Gravely Furniture Co in Virginia until sold to the Pulaski Furniture Co in the late 80s . The Pulaski Furniture Co was nearly a half-century old at the time. The Ridgeway name was eventually bought by Howard Miller in 2004. Ridgeway clocks had Hermle and later Keininger movements since the 80s. Not sure what they had prior to Pulaski.

Thanks for your help. Did some more detailed inspection of the number stamped inside the clock after seeing a similar "stamped" number in an other thread on here. What I thought was #8122759 is actually B122/59. What does that marking mean? I also looked all over the clock for any label that may identify the model number and/or Serial number/year of make. The only marking I was able to find was under the base of the clock. It read J-61-P-117. Is that a clue to the model number?

These are the numbers on the back of the clocks movement. "URGOS, Made in Germany, NO (0) Jewels, Unadjusted," "UW 32575C", "1098079." In my original post I attached a photo of the label that is on the clock face. Can you explain the markings- i.e., Dial, Model, Movement, etc?

As you observed, the movement was made by Urgos and is a model 32575C. The weights and lyre pendulum are just about identical to those in the Urgos 03046A I posted in this thread, and the dial is also similar so they are all likely Urgos-made as well. Unlike the 03046A, however, the 32575C does not appear to employ tubular bells, but rather likely uses chime rods, which would be located just behind the movement. If you can provide more images of that area, we may be able to provide more information.

In terms of year of make, I'd put yours somewhere in the early 1980s.

Year of make- 1980’s - sounds right from what I’ve been told by family members. Any idea of a model number or model name? Are there any clues to that in the numbers I’ve given in previous posts?

I'm sorry, I should have be clearer. I meant the model number of the clock or model name of the clock. Or any direction to find that information. Thanks!

The second image in your original post, of the Ridgeway Furniture ID tag, provides these answers; it's a Model 117 with an R1 Dial and cherry wood finish, the U32575 movement, and clock serial #22380. Outside of an old Ridgeway catalog, however, this information hold little real data about the clock.

The U32575 is a decent movement, and if you intend to keep and run it, I suggest it be serviced. Judging from the clock's overall condition, this one is a bit past due. I. You will also want to remove the tape and tighten or repair the threaded rod/end cap/chain post on the strike weight (far left) ASAP, as this keeps the weights inside the sleeve. If it fails and the tape gives way, it will certainly damage the bottom of the case and can also possibly damage the movement.

Hi, Lawrence.

Welcome to the message board!

I generally pop on here every month or two and check if anyone has posted any Ridgeway inquiries as far as model numbers, year made, etc. I have a few old Ridgeway catalogs and am occasionally able to provide info.

Unfortunately, I'm not finding your model shown in my catalogs. But as my catalogs are from ca. 1967, ca. 1972, 1977 and 1997, there are a number of years in between those gaps where I'm missing a lot of information.

However, in my opinion, based on looking at similarities with other Ridgeway clocks in my catalogs, I would place the manufacture date of yours more around the early-mid 1970s rather than early 1980s. But, as I said, this is just my opinion. I could be wrong.

If I should run across any additional information I'll let you know.

Congratulations on your clock!
Take care,
John
