I'd say, with a high degree of confidence, that it is of Swiss origin. The finish reminds me of a "Majestic" that I gave my dad years ago. The plate designs don't look like any American watch I've seen, and the finish looks Swiss.

The case was made by the American Watch Case Company, and bears the mark (winged wheel) that I usually see on Canadian-market watches. As far as the date, I'd guess that it's anywhere from 1910 to 1940. Hopefully someone else can get you something more definitive on the manufacturer and the year made. The Swiss movements can be tough. Good luck.

MrRoundel. On closer examination it does indeed indicate SWISS MADE on the edge of the face below the "seconds" hand. at first I mcould not make it out with the naked eye.

Thanks stewey. That is great info to have particularly as it makes reference to the FORTUNE brand and the wheeled wings that appear on this watch.

    Malcolm 9517,
I have a copy of a letter from Mr. P. Kushner who was a CP rail time inspector, who had remarked that there was some Bedford watches were being used in the western region of CP rail, although these mentioned watches were 21 jewel lever set watches adjusted to rail requirements. I am led to believe the fortune case was a Canadian case made by the American watch case co. in Canada. The process at the time was if a watch movement came to Canada cased, there was an added tax that had to be paid, so quite often a watch coming into Canada was uncased and cased here.
The Bedford watch Company was a Swiss maker. I do not think that the 15 jewel watch would have made it into rail service anywhere in north America.

Excellent info Bill. In all the info I have received I find it interesting that "Bedford" is spelled without the "e", yet on the watch face and inside on the movement itself it is spelled "Bedforde". Does anyone out here know how that came about? Is that perhaps Swiss for Bedford?

Sorry, I spoke before I looked also, the Bedford used on some CPR lines was BEDFORD, not BEDFORDE, so I recant the info I gave earlier.

    Hi Kevin,
I agree fully the watch presented would not be approved by any Canadian RR. Particularly because it is only a 15 jewel and likely pendant set. I believe the letter in which I refer to stated 21 jewel, lever set and would meet the standards, although it was stated that he had only heard of them being used on the west coast ?
