• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Gilbert mantle date of manufacture?

I recently inherited my grandfather's windup pendulum clock. Through the removable back, it bears markings inside: "Gilbert No 1126 (Code Word Dunkirk) Manufactured by Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winstead Conn. USA". It apparently was still working as of 6 or 7 years ago and I recall lovely chimes. However it now only runs for a minute or so after winding. It has both large and small keys. Convex glass front is intact. The round-topped dark wooden case has slight cracking.
Does anyone know the approximate year of manufacture? Also I intend to have it repared and keep it in the family, but still am curious as to its approximate worth.
Any information would be welcome. Thank you!

Welcome to the message board, Dr.Tom.

You have already given some information and the clock model may be "Dunkirk",
although I am not sure about that. Other members will give you adaquate information.

It might well be, that your clock is out of beat. Have a look here: beat setting 101

A picture would probably help identification of style and date, but it probably is a tambour clock from the mid-1920's. Tran Duy Ly's book on Gilbert clocks shows similar number/code word tambours, such as 1120 "Bradstreet," 1121, "Tuxedo," 1122 "Victoria," 1124 Chateau," 1123 "Nassau," and 1125 " Bellingham."

Here's the only pic I've been able to upload so far, but I can get some more of the mechanism if that'll help. Thanks! Clock Zip.jpg

Well, this is not what I was imagining. I retract what I said about tambours as applies to this clock, since this one is not of that style. It would rather fit the general category of cabinet clock and I might tentatively date to 1915 +-, based on similarities to other cabinet clocks from about that time. However, since it does not appear in Tran Duy Ly's book on Gilbert clocks, the suggested date is just speculation. A look at the movement might help us narrow down the date; Gilbert sometimes dated their movements after the turn on the (19th-20th) century. But, yes, No. 1126/Dunkirk is still its moniker.

Gilbert Clock mechanism.jpg 2012-04-20 004 (320x240).jpg Does this answer your inquiry since I'm not sure what flat plates are.
(Finally figured out how to shrink photos to uploadable file size!)

Solid plates, you mean? These are not. They have more or less rectangular cutouts, which solid plates would not.
