• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Greetings Al -- H.H.S.N. was a mark for the firm of Herm.[ann] Heinr.[ich] Strauß [ß=ss], of Nürnberg. The only information in Abeler's _Meister der Uhrmacherkunst_, the standard ref. for clockmakers in the German speaking tradions, is "erw. Hist. Uhrenauustell., Nürnberg 1905." In other words, they were mentioned in some connection with the historical clock & watch exhibition in N that year (in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the invention of the pocket watch (so they said) by Peter Henlein aka Petrus Hele. There were lots of firms represented, new and old clocks exhbited, etc. There's a dozen or so small-print pages on this exhibition in several issues of the 1905 _Deutsche Uhrmacher-Zeitung_. But the only mention of H.H. Strauß I found was someone in a list of individuals at one ceremony. On the other hand, my 1905 DUZ is missing pages, so there might be more in a full copy <G>. HHS of N is included in an 1895 trade list of "manufacturers and wholesalers" of pocket watches, and in an 1896 trade list of "manufacturers and wholesalers" of
wall clocks, tall clocks, etc. Yet that's all. We don't know if they were wholesalers (to the trade) or manufacturers. I'd guess the former. Regards, Duck NAWCC 118804
